Dreamborn

The Dreamborn are essence from the Dreamscape that crossed over to the mortal realm. They are the abstract thoughts and emotions of people made manifest, which makes them take on peculiar, and often otherworldly looking forms. They often look like a bizarre hybridization of animals, plants, and natural phenomena. Some can swim, slither, and even fly, all depending on what they represent and how they represent it. Because dreamborn are from the Dreamscape, Esnya’s realm, they are found mostly in the Faewood, and even then only rarely.   The alien nature of the Dreamborn has caused many rumors and superstitions to be attributed to them, and so they are generally considered a good omen or even a boon from Esnya, while in some areas (mostly outside the Faewood) they are considered no more than children’s tales. There are a few notable types of Dreamborn that have certain characteristics, though not all Dreamborn fit into one of these categories.
  • Regal Force - These are the greatest of the Dreamborn, massive entities as tall as the trees, whose power is so immense that they can warp the world around them slightly. These awe-inspiring beings often encompass the broadest and most complex emotions, such as Anger, Wonder, and Dread. Their presence is often felt, in that these emotions pass on to other beings and can even manifest in the wildlife, in a way. However, these dreamborn are as rare as they are powerful - once in a lifetime would be an understatement. They usually resemble an animal blown up to wild proportions.
  • Floodchasers - Sometimes, when there is a long and rainy winter accompanied by major floods, Floodchasers will spawn near or in large water sources that have overflown. They are blue, serpentine entities are very wide, but as thin as an arm, that split up at the end into five thin tails that get tied and looped through one another. Its back is a hard rough skin, covered in seashells. Their head-like tip is maned with small tentacles and barnacles, and their “face” is composed of a long vertical slit, with 3 smaller slits (“eyes”) on each side of it. Floodchasers are believed to hold magical powers. In some stories, those that find floodchasers are given the ability to breathe water, walk on water, or something of that genre. Myths about floodchasers are so common that some villages go “floodchasing” and travel to nearby rivers after floods and hard winters, as tradition.
  • Roilwisps - Roilwisps are the most invasive of the Dreamborn. They look like a circle of appendages with four feathered wings that have symmetrical patterns on them. The buzzing of their wings causes discomfort and irritation in their surroundings, like a fly that doesn’t leave. Unlike other Dreamborn, Roilwisps are seen as a bad omen, leading to proverbs like “Saw the Roilwisps”, meaning befell great misfortune.
