The River Bixby

Laidros is partitioned by rivers all across it's territory, both big and small. They feed the fertile fields, pastures, and orchards of the country, as well as act as the country's veins of commerce, ferrying river and paddleboats between towns and cities, like a secondary system of roads built by nature.   They vary in size. Some big, like the Conheller, which flows cross country to the sea and acts as a highway between many of the nations most important locations. Others are small, only going a few miles at most, or even so small as to exist solely on one or two families lands. Known as Doll Rivers, these small (in comparison) waterways often hold sentimental value to those whose land they reside upon.   The river Bixby, is one such river.   Residing on the land of the Coffee family, the river flows in a perfect circle while skirting the borders, with no tributaries that can be detected from the surface. For all intents and purposes, it seems to feed into itself, perpetuating it's own flow.   Family friends like to guess at the mechanism with which the river flows, stating things such as underwater tributaries, like a well, to making the guess that perhaps a bored god made it long ago. Now, most people like to say 'a god did it' in cases where people don't understand something at first glance, but this may be a case where such a claim holds merit.   The family itself has taken it as a sort of symbol of their duty, perpetual under it's own power, and never deigned to really look into it over the many generations they've resided there, thinking that it would ruin the magic that they have attributed to it.

Ecosystem

It shares the standard flora and fauna of the region, with many magnolias and Tombwillows providing shade over it's waters. Many species of freshwater fish make their home in the river, of which the Coffee family will often fish for dinner when they all reside at Coffee manor at the same time.     There is also a water spirit that has made it's home within since times before even Amos Coffee, and Amos' father. It tends to stick to itself, but has often provided a source of comfort to members of the family when they needed it, such as when the oldest of the Coffee children were killed in the Betrayal at Cath. Johanna Coffee spent almost a week next to the river, rain or shine, barely eating, and sleeping even less when she received the news. Joined intermittently by her surviving children (Namely a young Clayton), until Amos returned from over-seas with the bodies and they were laid to rest in the family plot.   The water spirit remained nearby the whole time, simply providing companionship, in it's own silent way. On occasion, it can be seen physically interacting with those by the river, seeming to reach out before dancing around the probing grasp in a playful manner, especially with children.

Many members of the family have a favorite spot on the banks of the river, away from the spots chosen by the rest of the family. When that person has died, naturally or not, it's not uncommon for that spot to be left as is. A reminder of those that have passed. When those spots have fallen into disrepair, a small memorial will be built on the banks using the non-perishable remnants of those little hideaways.

The water spirit feels really intriguing. Makes me wonder what else is in this world.   Great article!!!   ----------------------------------------------------------------   Feel free to check out my Rivers/Waterways entry: Loch Mesner

Is the water spirit an etheral being or the soul of an old living being? Why does he simpathize with Johanna? So intrigued. Nice article.

Interesting read especially the spirit and the strange way of the river flow. I think you accidently put a link incorrectly with the Conheller(location:3a970672-02c2-43c0-a79c-71f70f3df714). :)

Feel free to check my new world Terra Occidentalis if you want to see what I am up to!

Ah, you're right, I absolutely did. Thank you very much for the heads u.

War is a beast of dichotomy, of equal parts glory and horror.
