The Taming

Written by Mels

History

The original concept of the Taming emerged with Senan O'Lowry, the original Tamerwho, following the discovery of his intrinsic connection with magical creatures, set about learning as much as he could about them. Over time, Senan came to develop a better understanding and respect of wild creatures. In a chance encounter, Senan came across a griffon on a rampage through a forest, she was barreling through the brush and knocking down vegetation of all sizes in her wake. Called to action, Senan attempted to soothe her unsuccessfully as, using her enormous talons, she slashed long gashes into the half-elf's neck and chest. Wounded but undeterred, Senan continued to track the griffon, tending to his wounds along the way. Eventually, he was able to come across the source of the creature's anguish. Within a large nest in a crag nearby, lie the comatose body of a featherless baby griffon. During the mother's rampage elsewhere, Senan was able to get close and discovered that the baby had been bitten by a venomous serpent, local to the area. Although the baby clung to life by just a thread, Senan lifted it from it's home and began to carry the heavy creature to his camp miles away in order to attempt to treat it, wincing from his own wounds. Senan was able to make it to his camp before the mother griffon discovered her nest empty and tracked him to his tent in the woods with her child. Barreling through the brush, she was prepared to end Senan's life but stopped short when she heard a weak chirp coming from her baby. Quickly realizing what had happened, the griffon tenderly approached to see for herself. She allowed Senan to finish treating with an anti-venom and medicine kit he had in his pack and not even a day later, the baby was back on it's feet. The mother briskly snorted at Senan in respect before the pair returned to their home. Several weeks later, Senan was traveling along the road on foot when two large winged creatures descended upon him at ferocious speed. Whirling around to take in his attacker, Senan realized it was actually the mother griffon and her, now fully matured, child. The pair landed and approached Senan, the younger of the two prancing forward and nuzzling him affectionately. The mother stood stoically behind

Execution

The Taming ritual is executed following an extended period of socialization and exposure to a particular creature, almost always magical in nature. The exact terms of the ritual usually consist of Tamers and their partners circling an intended pair as they meditate together, ending with a symbolic melding of their souls usually acted out by forehead to forehead contact or the humanoid placing a hand on the creature's forehead.
