Hilland Goats

An all-purpose breed of goat

Hilland Goats are a type of medium-sized caprid native to the Dotak Mountain Range located to the north and west of the city of Helemia in Rothos. Hilland Goats are common throughout the Dotak Mountain Range. The young of Hilland Goats are known as "lambs" instead of "kids".

Resources

This type of goat is raised for its milk, meat, and fiber.

Milk Production

Hilland Goats are capable of producing nearly an entire 4 kilograms of milk each day in its 305-day lactation period. 4 kg of milk is approximately 4 liters.

Shearing and Fleece

Hilland Goats are sheared twice a year: once in late spring and once in early autumn. Their high-quality fleeces are inexpensive for those in Helemia. A single fleece of 3 kilograms and dark gray color is worth roughly 50 gold pieces in Helemia. Other colors of wool are usually more expensive than the dark gray color, with pure black wool being the most expensive, fetching 35 gold pieces per kilogram of wool, or roughly 105 gold pieces per fleece.

Its fleece can be of any natural color (black, brown, gray, tan, and white), but a dark gray is the most common color for Hilland Goats. The pure black color of goats obtained by certain breeders in Helemia makes for a highly prized fleece.

Pure black fleeces are highly prized because they are extremely rare. Another reason for their high value is their quality; pure black fleeces tend to maintain a high degree of softness to the skin and also tend to have a high concentration of lanolin, which helps with waterproofing. The softness and lanolin content is directly linked to the absence of the genes responsible for white patterning, but not directly linked to the genes responsible for the black coloring. Pure black fleeces are the only color used to make the uniforms of the Seraphim and the Archangel.

Meat and Hide

Although meat is not the primary resource gained from Hilland Goats, many of the older goats are slaughtered just before winter's bitter cold takes hold of the land. These goats' bodies are then used in full or sold by the owners.

Hilland Goat meat is known to be very flavorful, with a strong and slightly gamey taste. It is often dried, salted, and seasoned with dill or garlic. Another common way to preserve and prepare the meat has the meat being smoked and seasoned with, again, dill or garlic.
