An understanding of mud bricks and/or wattle and daub is required to create a city and provides a Population Bonus. Each subsequent addition to their building knowledge allows for an increase in city size, for example timber and stick build. Construction allows for the building of monuments. In addition if your people understand construction and the other civilization still only know mud bricks and/or wattle and daub you gain a cultural bonus (or any other time your civilization is at least two beyond the others in building). Masonry allows your people to work with stone. Bridge Building allows for the building of bridges. Engineering allows for larger and more complicated structures. Architecture allows for building decorations like arches, vaults, and domes, which if found on religious structures will increase your populations awe of you thus increasing their obedience.How does government affect my civilization?
Giving your civilization code of laws allows them to create cities, gain a +1 in combat situations, provides a Population Bonus, and enact more advanced forms of government. An aristocracy allows a greater level of control with less likelihood of rebellion. A democracy allows your civilization to grow more quickly, but also means they might not follow your commands. A theocracy will follow your orders exactly, but will be unlikely to act on their own. A timocracy means your people will be focused on gaining more land so that they can become citizens. A tyranny means your people will do what you order, but there is a chance of rebellion.How does literacy and culture affect my civilization?
Cultural advances increase your civilization's culture. A higher culture rating allows you to intimidate other civilizations with your superiority and potentially provides a Culture Bonus. The alphabet makes it easier for your government to maintain control, particularly of the outer regions. Literacy, the printing press, and the university are necessary to increase the size of your democracy, otherwise your people will slip into another form of government. They also increase the spread of your ideas. Map making increases the distance your explorers can explore. Painting, sculpting, and writing all introduce the possibility to creating a great work of art which will further increase your civilizations culture. However, great works of art are subject to theft. Archeology allows a civilization the possibility of rediscovering something lost to war, famine or some other tragedy.How does magic affect my civilization?
Each type of magic may only be selected by one race. The exact affects depend upon the type of magic chosen and might provide a Population Bonus.- Abjuration - this is protection magic

Each advancement in religion increases the likelihood that your civilization will obey your commands. Two advancements beyond all other civilizations you interact with in religion grants you religious intimidation. Possible advancements in this area include dugout and/or reed boats; harbor; navigation; plank boats like carvels, clinkers, or cold molded boats; planing hulls; pontoons; rudders; sails; smooth curve hulls; and steam ships.How does trade and agriculture affect my civilization?
Advancements in trade and agriculture can increase your civilizations size, provide a population bonus, and/or wealth. Animal domestication increases your civilizations size and is necessary for chariots and horseback riding.Caravans allow for increased trading increasing your civilizations wealth.
Crop rotation increases your civilizations size, but requires farming.
Currency increases the possibility of trade thus increasing your civilization's wealth.
Drying, salting, and/or smoking increases the food thus increasing your civilization's size. It does require either hunting or fishing.
Farming increases your civilization's size.
Fishing increases your civilization's size. Advances in ships and sailing will further increase the benefits of fishing.
A granary provides a small boost to both size and wealth.
Irrigation increases your civilization's size, but requires farming.
A mill provides a small boost to both size and wealth.
A plantation provides a small boost to both size and wealth, however it requires farming and a lower class.
A plough provides a boost to your civilization's size. Animal domestication will further increase its usefulness.
Pottery increases your civilization's wealth. When combined with sculpture it increases the chance of a great work.
A railroad increases your civilization's wealth.
Roads increases your civilization's wealth.
Terraced farming increases your civilization's size, but requires farming.
