Dragon Powder Gun

Guns in this world are actively being rediscovered as some gunpowder weapons are being uncovered from before the Cladeon. With the absence of understanding of gunpowder a few artificers found another solution years ago before a traditional gun was found. They discovered that dragon scales possessed enough raw magical energy to make wicked blasts and that barrels could be slightly embedded with specific scale colors to make a weapon fire a small iron pellet.   Not many have been able to make these weapons as it requires a unique understanding of arcane and mechanical studies. Guns have exchangeable barrels and use shard powder as a propulsion mechanic. Most slingers will carry multiple barrels, the most common are fire (red), lightning (yellow), acid (green), necrotic (black), force (white) and psychic (purple). Each of these barrels will augment the damage type of the iron shot fired from it. As for the propulsion from the barrel dragon shard powder crafted from dragon scales is used. This use for scales has led to an uptick in hunting of dragon in kin since these same mechanics are what power any cannons on ships and large explosions.   When loading the barrels you’ll want to make sure you keep count as to how much powder goes into it. If you overload barre and expel all of the powder you’ve loaded at once you’ll imitate an effect similar to the breath weapons of the corresponding dragons.   Arcanist have spent years trying to figure out how this works as to them the creation of breath effects from the scales alone is terrifying and something that shouldn’t be happening. Given that these are a newer creation it is unlikely the study of the past will help them uncover much to answer this. Further study and research is needed to fully comprehend how and why these weapons work so effectively.

I really enjoyed how the second half of the article felt like someone had written up a guide or a report on Dragon Powder Guns, and find myself hoping that someday you'd rewrite the first half to keep the style (The use of "you" and how you had described taking care of the guns). It brought me right into the world in a way that made me want to click for links to other articles - what is the Cladeon? Do Dragon Scales have other uses? What about records of events where gun use or imitations have gone wrong? When have they been used? Are there any individuals, organizations, or events of note in association to the guns?

I really appreciate your comments. I try to use you in some articles I've done as this is a world I use for 5th edition D&D and its fun to have players find articles that way. I have a lot more info I want to get into world anvil and have linked with maps etc. Do you have any recommendations as to how start expanding? Is it better to start large scale or small? I used the summer camp as a jumping off point but going from that is a bit intimidating. To answer some of your questions. The Cladeon was a cataclysmic event approximately 3000 years ago where monsters over ran the world the majority of the world lost their memories. Dragon scales do have other uses such as in alchemical potions and brews as well as for armor.

My usual recommendation is to start with whatever will have the greatest impact on your players - the stuff they would be dealing with regularly.   For my own example - I have a Civil War going on, so I spent one WorldEmber (the December World Anvil event) just writing about the factions of that civil war, and the member organizations within those factions. By doing so, I was "filling out" the general gaps of what kinds of landscapes those member organizations are based in, the motives of those organizations, and the stakes involved.   I do also have a ton of articles that have little to no impact on my own players, but I use those to help me when I find something I need to fill out for them in a pinch.
