Why?

Where hath gone the days of youth,
Where children danced in fields of green?
Where hath gone the days of peace,
Where we feared not the stars above?
  I remember in days long gone,
We stood united, as one for all;
The future was clear and bright;
Peace and love, for all, everlasting.
  But deep below the pure surface,
A serpent coiled ‘round our heart,
Choking our soul, killing our spirit;
And waiting for the chance to strike.
  And then, they came from the stars,
Fierce dragons, clad in crimson steel,
Ancient demons made incarnate.
They came forth as holy messengers,
Protection, strength, prestige, respect,
They tempted our kin these gifts,
Drew a sword between our kind,
And it was then, the serpent struck.
  Our heart shattered to bloodied pieces,
Unity burned in the flames of hate;
Brother has turned against brother,
Sister against sister,
Lover against lover,
Friend against friend,
Red stains green with blood of kin;
  The stars above rain fire and death,
As cities burn to ash and ruin.
The world itself burns to glass,
Yet we keep fighting ever onward.
  And when the rage has subsided,
As we lie alone, bloodied and dying,
Among a thousand thousand dead kinsmen,
Our last thought shall forever haunt us;
  Why?
