Guild notice—Presentation of Noble Houses

What

Extremely powerful families ruling over land and people.   Loyalty to the king optional, but loyalty to the head of the family certainly is not!   Anyone descended from the House founder is noble, but the head of the family can boot them out and make them commoners.

How

A family becomes noble by beating a current noble house and stealing their land, titles, and all possessions.
No recognition by anyone necessary.   However, society has become less violent, and conquest has run out of fashion. Wealthy and clever people can buy a title from the king.

Priviledges

Strong legal protections, easier recruitment for presitgious universities and administrative posts, networking opportunities with influential people...   Traditionally, some independance from the king regarding laws and justice in their lands, but this has decreased in recent decades.

Noble Houses

House Royenne, House Labruyère, House Cenlys, House Coroy, House Nivers, House Lange...

Categories

Ancient, old, and newer Houses, with age bringing a lot more prestige and privildge.   E.g. members of ancient Houses can enter one of the three big universities without passing entrance exams.   Newer Houses bought their noble titles and so are scorned by the older Houses, but they still have a lot of influence at court.

Political Affiliation

Used to be Light vs Dark.   However, all newer Houses were Light, helping boost the party and outlawing dangerous magic such as rituals, and eventually the Dark party itself.   Afterwards, some of the Dark Houses converted to the Light, but most instead created the new Traditionalist party.

Foreign relations

Nobles respect each other regardless of personal inimities, even between countries at war—though this doesn't prevent them from killing each other.   Houses can emigrate to another country and regain their noble status by conquering land, however they become "new" Houses and lose priviledges.

Considerations for members of the rune guild: treating all members of noble Houses with respect is nonnegotiable. Most of you are nobles but are still required to respect older Houses. In addition, this is not an excuse not to respect your superior inside the guild! Noble blood does not bring you instantaneous talents and skills, nor the priviledges of ignoring our internal rules.
