Abyssal Pristinid
Abyssal Pristinids are a large amphibian species native to Praelux, the Chiftel homeworld. It lives most of its life in the depths of the ocean, but will create nests on the relatively safer land to mate and hatch young.
Abyssal Pristinid: “Deep ocean leviathan nester”
Basic Information
Anatomy
Abyssal Pristinids are octopedal, with four pairs of wide, flat limbs that end in claws, similar to a turtle's. Their main body section appears similar to an orca whale that tapers more slowly, like a Reaper Leviathan, and with a far less powerful tail built for steering rather than propulsion. Their chromatophoric abilities are weaker than most species on Praelux due to their deep-sea habitat, and they typically appear solid black with an occasional white sparkle or patch. Their internal core takes up a relatively large amount of their total volume, being about 7ft wide and extending into the head and tail of the creature, adding more power and precision to their limb movements.
Growth Rate & Stages
Newborn Abyssal Pristinids are only about one foot wide. They hatch in groups of two to six, in nests on beaches, shores, and coves, and quickly stride into the ocean where they will be taught the basics of hunting other creatures in the shallows. As they grow into adults over their first ten years, they consume more, move deeper, and grow larger. They typically stay in the depths until they are around twenty, at which point they will return to the shore, create a nest, and raise young every few years until around eighty.
Ecology and Habitats
Lives almost exclusively in the bottom depths of the ocean, only a few dozen meters above the sea floor. While Abyssal Pristinids are far from the apex predator of Praelux's titan-spawning oceans, their main predators are exceedingly rare or live higher in the water column.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Eats basically anything that creates currents or emits a strong radio signal, wherever it is in the ocean. Is known to siphon ferrofluid off of other creatures when injured, though this is usually less efficient than binding raw oceanic fluid.
