Caerffili, City of Shields

At the southern end of Cwm Rhymni (the Vale of Rhymney), to the west of Sirowhy Vale, where the River Rhymney turns to the east, on the High Road between Caerleon and Nedd, lies the town of Caerffili, which is at the center of the district which extends into the valley. It is said that in the days following the fall of the Empire, a monastery was built here by Cenydd the Blessed, which he in turn left to his son Ffili. A church dedicated to Cenydd's patron Cadoc the Good serves the trefs that cluster thickly in the broad valley. The town has become an important administrative center for the Brenin, as it forms a point of contact between the fertile lowlands of Glamorgan and the hill regions of the independent clans.

Government

Ydris ap Yfor is the Rhyngill, keeping order for the Brenin with a force of around 200 soldiers.  These are all recruited from the families loyal to the Brenin.

Industry & Trade

The town is supported by the farms of royal maenors in the lowlands, while highland herdsmen trade for grain.  There are several mining communities in the hills as well, providing a steady supply of both iron and coal.

Infrastructure

The Church of Saint Cadoc

Geography

The town is located less than a mile south of the Rhymney River, just where it turns dramatically to the east.  The River Taf, which rises in the Black Mountains far to the north and continues to flow through the old imperial port of Caerdyf, flows on its southerly course some two miles to the west.  The Hall of the Rhyngill is located on a highly defensibly island surrounded by a moat-like lake, further protected by the town walls at the outer perimeter of the settlement.
