Kilgrothian Ethnicity in Dálnaes | World Anvil

Kilgrothian

"I am Inğandrül Vand’íshaku Ördrunâk, Crown Prince of the great kingdom of Kilgroth, and I am here to reclaim my throne."
The people of Kilgroth are big, hardy, and harsh, much like their homeland. They hail from the northwestern corner of Dálnaes, where snow falls year-round upon mountains that slice the sky.

APPEARANCE

When looking at a group of humans from different parts of the world, there is no mistaking a Kilgrothian. Making their homes in the harsh Rugatûn Mountains has left these people with milk-white skin and and almost colorless blue-gray eyes. Kilgrothians also adorn themselves with intricate tattoos that symbolize who they see themselves as. Some Kilgrothian's tattoos move upon their body. Originally this was a sign that the Kilgrothian was a mage, but nowadays it is almost a guarantee that they are a servant of Chaos.

LANGUAGE & NAMING CUSTOMS

The Kilgrothian tongue is as different from others in Dálnaes as you can get. It is harsh, guttural, and rough, not unlike its native speakers. Words often have four or more syllables and contain sounds more akin to bestial grunting than human speech. Likewise, Kilgrothian names are long and often difficult to pronounce by other cultures. Kilgrothians that regularly travel into other lands will often offer a shortened version of their name for others to call them by. While this may be seen as a kind gesture to the other culture, the real purpose is so that the Kilgrothian doesn't have to hear them butcher their name.   A full Kilgrothian name comes in four parts: clan name, family name, birth name, and core name.
  • The clan name is the name of the clan their ancestors belonged to. These days, it isn't as common for Kilgrothians to include their clan name unless they came from a clan of particular importance.
  • Family name is the name taken from their parents and more immediate ancestors. Family names can change based on marriage or exile.
  • The birth name is that given to an individual by their parents at birth. It is how the first name by which they introduce themselves to others.
  • A Kilgrothian's core name is rarely shared with others. It is the name they give to themselves to identify who they choose to be, usually related to their chosen profession. Not all Kilgrothians take a core name.
