The Blue Cat
The myth of the Blue Cat is first emerged in the eastern Dain, before spreading throughout the continent. It describes a cat-like apparition, initially causing innocent mischief, intensifying over time sometimes to catastrophic results. There are rare mentions of a similar entity appearing across centuries, usually in spoken tradition, but none of the affected people are able to present physical proof of their haunting.
The appearance of the Blue Cat differs between sources. While keeping its blue coloration, some say it's more akin to a barely visible, roughly cat-shaped cloud of smoke, some insist it is a literal cat, fluorescing lightly with an unearthly sheen. The size of an average adult cat seems to be consistent.
The manifestations of the Blue Cat, according to the story, begin very subtly. Those afflicted hear tapping on the doors and windows, find scratches on furniture and notice that small objects tend to fall from the shelves and tables as if by themselves. Rationally, this leads to the conclusion that an animal made its way into one's home. Hovewer, the culprit it is never found. Instead, the house's inhabitants start tripping over something they can't see and they find small dead animals both inside and outside their home. Food starts to go missing as well, or is getting spoiled by being taken out of containers and spilled. Rarely, the victims report being awoken by a mass sitting on their chest, and that's where most descriptions of the Blue Cat come from.
All of the above still does not add up to a potentially deadly intrusion. While the house's occupants may be tired of looking for the invisible pest, unless they start talking about the Cat with others and risk ridicule, they may still live a relatively normal life. Unfortunately, about 8-9 weeks after the first incident, the Blue Cat becomes aggressive. The moment is accompanied by long, shrieking sounds, sometimes lastning hours, followed by quitet moaning. One of the rooms of the house becomes the Cat's territory, which it tirelessly defends with sharp pointed intruments, presumably claws and teeth. This supposedly lead to casualties in several retellings of the story. After a day or two the moaning sounds subside and the Blue Cat disappears, leaving the house's inhabitants with very little proof of its existence.
While mostly not directly aggressive, the Blue Cat is considered a malevolent spirit by most that heard of it. Tradition of Barring the Door is said to protect against the Cat, but no stories mention it explicitly. What they do mention is that adopting a regular, corporeal cat can prevent the apparition form settling in.
Stories about the Blue Cat seem similar enough to warrant belief in the entity. Unfortunately, there are few modern reports about its appearence, either because of their rarity, or because the afflicted families prefer not to speak out. The University of Erwy is aware of the phenomenon and eagerly awaits new instances.
This is a really cool article! I like how the cat starts of tame-ish before becoming aggressive. Great job!
Thank you, I appreciate that! I'm sure the Blue Cat is just misunderstood. It might be slightly supernatural, but if only people caught on to why it haunts for about 9 weeks...
Nine Lives? Also I need to ask. Can I pet it?
Small hint, the moaning at the end of the haunting sounds like there is more than one. It just needs to borrow a safe spot for a bit. Of course you can pet it, as much as you can pet any stray cat that invites itself in. It's mostly invisible, so some cooperation on its part would be necessary. Maybe, to find it easier, make a nice cat bed for it instead of denying its existence?
Ghost Kittens?! Ok if the Blue Cat came to my home I'd welcome it with open arms :D Just need to go buy a cat bed one sec- lol
