The Kingdom of Zilindwelf
Zilindwelf is a coastal mining kingdom to the east of Mitheach. It is steeped in dwarvish culture and history to the point where other races do feel uncomfortable planting roots here, but they are not a xenophobic people. They are quite welcoming to travellers- however, their traditions and strict etiquette can be confusing.
Zilindwelf is almost completely dwarven in population. There are a few homes rented to visiting Mitheachans but immigrants to this very tight-knit society are rare.
Gender roles here fluctuate, but all married couples are comprised of “one to tend the hearth and one to work the forge, as together they share the fire.” The technological advancements in Zilindwelvish society are therefore attributed equally to the inventor and to their hearth-tending partner, if they have one, as they recognize the value of another person cleaning your space and cooking meals for you. It is not unheard of for a family to have more than one of either role, but couples of two hearth-tenders or forge-workers are unthinkable. Children are, of course, educated in both fields equally, strictly to prevent a learned bias and allow them to choose their own path.
There is a strong following of the Forgemother Moradin, along with her sons. (see: The Religion of Zilindwelf) There is also a large percentage of the population that reveres the spirit of the forge fire without personification.
Dwarves are known for their skill in masonry and smithing, but the dwarves of Zilindwelf are adept seafarers as well. The current King and Queen are supporting an endeavor to explore the Eastern seas. (They know not to mess with the giants of Raumloma to the north.) The Zilindwelvish fleet is also the only rival to the tabaxi pirate brigades of the Mac Lir Isles.
Currency
Zilindwellers use gold and silver currency; however, their coins are different to that of Salonika and Mitheach. The smallest denomination is the silver drab. Twelve silver bits equals a gold and silver (like a Canadian loony!) bit. Six bits equals a gold talent.
Legislative Body
Zilindwelf is led by a King and Queen, but most of the quotidian affairs of state are handled democratically by a Cabinet of elected officials. There has always been a king and queen, in what was originally a direct monarchy that became more egalitarian after a coup in 2036. “King” and “Queen” are not related to the gender of the individuals, rather to their roles in the relationship. The equality of the roles of king and queen fluctuate based on the relationship of the married couple.
