Shon met Master Veon-Zih at ten years old. Intent on joining the Temple of Hengist, Shon was nonetheless fascinated by Veon-Zih's way of fighting unarmed and unarmored. Realizing such skills must require a lot of training, -something he would need to do as a Squire striving to be accepted as a Paladin,- Shon requested Master Veon-Zih teach him. Not just the Monk's martial arts, but also how to train properly, thinking he could apply similar practices and disciplines across fields. Veon-Zih was in the Church of Soleil to visit the Abbot, Father Branston, and had never taken a student before. But he was fascinated by Shon and the potential he demonstrated and decided to teach him the basics. When Shon showed not only proficiency but discipline unusual for his age, Veon-Zih began spending more time training him. Taking longer and longer trips to Clearhelm to visit and teach. They grew close as student and master, and Veon-Zih continued to come to train Shon even at Hamerfoss. When Shon left Hamerfoss, he traveled with Veon-Zih, working for the Temple of Hengist. Neither are sure when they began to see each other as family.

Author's Note: So, back in the day, when Shon and Lily's story was just meant to be books 4&5, and everything before that was back story showing/explaining how they gained the skills and traits that they have- Way WAY back then, Veon-Zih was a non-character, a named NPC at best. I had no plans to bring him into Shon's adulthood, even his name was from a generator >.<. His sole purpose was to be the one to teach Shon monk stuff, as long as he did that, anything else he did in the spur of the moment was characterization. But as the bastard took shape on the page I quickly realized I would never want to brush their relationship under the rug as just a "teacher I had when I was a kid." Veon-Zih and his relationship with Shon was the first big turning point that shifted the original idea in my head, and the loose plan I'd drawn up, to what it is now. I like this one much much better.
