Session 7: The Third Pact Report

Written by Shiftrex

General Summary

The group retreated from the room where the large, soul gem was and decided to take the statues from the altar room with them. They were carved from mundane materials but masterfully crafted to represent a Black Dragon's Head, a Beholder, an Abolith, and a Frost Giant who had been blinded. They decided to retrace their steps and came upon a room that they had bypassed when they first entered the stronghold. Here they found a completely dark room with a strong, well-kept door that let them rest for a bit to regain their strength. Etched on the walls of this room was an epic narrative told through artwork.   This artwork depicted a Tiefling that was scorned and detested by Drow. It depicted the Tiefling going on a quest, attaining divinity and then being set to overcome three monsters. An Abolith, a Beholder, and a Frost Giant whose eyes had been gouged out. Then it showed the Tiefling being esteemed by an Adamantite dragon of the Underdark. It showed favor and then it showed the two pitted against a Black Dragon of renown. The next section of the mural was damaged beyond comprehension and could not be discerned but the last part of the Mural depicted the Tiefling being honored by Drow and ceremoniously buried. An inscription indicated that this was the Hero of Dreadfall, Tartarus whose soul was meant to stand guard over a demon in this tomb so that it would never escape again. It was at this moment that the group realized that on this mural was the depiction of a sunken, stone tomb in the center of a subterranean lake made by the Drow. They were in the Tomb depicted where the Hero was buried with his treasures, all of which they had seen save for one. An eastern glaive, a weapon often used by Drow, they had yet to stumble upon both that and the burial site of the hero depicted.   They steeled their resolve and once more approached the hidden door that they had found in the first crossroad when they entered the tomb. Here they found an inset where the "key-like" item they found could be used. It opened not only one door but many in sequence began opening behind this door. Numbering 27 doors in total to reveal a final barrier between them and what they assumed to be the resting place of the hero's spirit. They saw that the hero was depicted in full, lifesize glory here on the final barrier. A Tiefling in heavy armor with an assortment of weapon facing them head-on. Above his head was a halo but it was cantered behind his head in a way that it looked like the silver shape of a crescent moon turned sideways. The group realized they had seen this symbol many times before, especially throughout the ancient Drow city they had visited.   They opened this final door and were met with the stench of death. The mist was too thick to see through as they pushed on, in this room, they could make out the vague shape of a stone casket with a large creature looming over it. The Red Mage called out, expecting to converse with the spirit of the hero but was met with a visceral scream as a rotting fiendish hound revealed itself. The scream was a mixture of dozens of furious and tormented voices, the Paladin and the Barbarian immediately turned on their heels and began to flee as they were filled with a mortal fear. The Red Mage was left alone for the slightest of moments before the Barbarian found his senses and fell into a Rage and the Paladin called upon a Channel Divinity to strike the beast with divine fear. What followed was a brutal battle as the Barbarian clung to the fiendish beast and its rotting carcass while they tried to subdue it.   A narrow victory was achieved.   After dispatching the beast they opened the tomb and found naught but ashes, a weapon, and a voice that clung to the air:   The Path is walked
The Deed is done
My time is over
They found an ancient weapon inside that seemed to have residual magical power though much of it had been lost to time or use. They took this weapon with the intent to have its properties identified with no amount of respect to the hero that had once wielded it, knowing that to gain acceptance and become Drow Honored was a feat unheard of for a member of his race. They retreated from the Tomb due to their weariness and climbed back up the cliff toward the tunnel that led home. Here they encountered a peaceful Myconid who greeted them and treated their immediate injuries. He identified himself as Mito, a far walker that had been chosen to wander within proximity of his village to assist those that found themselves in peril and warn his village of those that would do them harm. After a quick exchange, the group said farewell and journeyed back to the Mithril Mantle.
