Session 6: The Story Telling Banquet Report
General Summary
The party continued to mingle at the Story Telling Banquet, each of them settling in near a guest that they enjoyed the company of as the Empress arrived. Among the stories told a historical account was given of the downfall of the previous Emperor, the escape of the current Empress from the Human Empire at the age of ten and her life under the protection of a Witch Coven. The Coven of the White Tree sheltered her on the Fire Islands until she grew to the age of 16, it was then that she returned to Stronghold to gain control of the throne again. This became a difficult task, though Alexander Cross and Darius Nizz were noted as two of her greatest supporters during this time and helped her to regain control of the throne.
As the banquet quieted down, the party made their way back to the Splintered Bone Inn and were immediately cut off from anything else. Kel, the local guild leader and tavern owner, engaged the party with the task of finishing paperwork associated with their party as they had already grown popular with the locals and novice adventurers. The party decided upon a name and drafted some initial requirements for anyone wanting to join their group before taking their first interview. An Elven Barbarian introduced themselves and was quickly inducted into the group.
The Paladin stayed back to finish paperwork while the group ventured out, the Ranger had a desire to find a way back into the cultist lair that they explored earlier in the day. With the help of her fox, she was able to find a way down through the sewers, a rather filthy march through the sewers revealed a passageway that was blocked by a raised step and a ramp that led further down. The party wasted no time and made their way down into an area that greatly resembled the cultist's lair but the doorway leading out of the initial room they fell into was blocked by a large pile of leaves, sticks and natural debris. The Ranger had a bad feeling about this but it went unvoiced as they tried to shift the debris aside only to be attacked by a monster known as a Shambling Mound, the creature was large and powerful but the group surrounded it and held it at bay.
The Rogue found themselves thrown into a wall and the ranger was beaten down before the Shambling Mound moved forward and engulfed the Cleric, intent on suffocating and crushing them. However, at the last moment, a surge of necrotic power surged through the creature, blackening the leaves and wilting it like a lesser plant. The Shambling Mound collapsed and gold coins scattered across the ground. Being tattered and bruised the party decided to return to the Tavern for the night and retire, resting their bodies and minds for the road ahead.
The party decided to stay in Stronghold for the next two weeks. Everyone busied themselves with some form of work whether it was to generate gold or to better themselves by taking basic magic classes within the city. Some were incredibly successful, trading their magical expertise for coin and others turned their ear to the local rumors and kept an eye for suspicious happenings all while becoming known more and more as a competent group while the days past. This time allowed them to recover from injuries, practice their skills and plan their next moves which involved procuring mounts and planning a route from Stronghold to the Fairy King's Wood.
