Session 3: To the Tower Report

General Summary

The party found themselves caught up in a large proceeding, the southern gates of Stronghold were buzzing with activity and the townsfolk lined the streets making it difficult to navigate. During this gathering, two new adventurers had just arrived in town and found themselves swept up into the crowds as well, a Ranger from the Feywild and a tall Warforged from the Tundra. Everyone's attention was held as the reason for the crowd became apparent, an Adult Orium Dragon landed outside the city's gate and waited to be escorted through town on foot. Everyone pressed close and had to be held back by lines of the Night Guard while the Grand Duelist walked out to meet the dragon, a well-known historian of mortal rulers and monarchs, named Xiv.
The reception for the Dragon was one of wonder, awe, and excitement but the Grand Duelist himself received a mixed one at best with some favoring his presence and others disapproving of it entirely. While the crowd was focused on the proceeding some thugs moved around the edges of the crowd, all visibly marked with the symbol of a local crime syndicate called the "Red Smoke." When the Rogue noticed these characters moving about, looking from person to person, she immediately slipped over by the two new adventurers that had just arrived in town because of how physically imposing they were. After this she immediately started yelling, a commotion broke out in the crowd causing the line of guards to break as they tried to settle the disturbance.
The Cleric, a worshiper of Kallex and an Archaeologist, immediately took this opportunity to slip through the crowd and move close to the dragon before calling out to it in Draconic. This gained the attention of the dragon who halted the proceeding and turned in the middle of the street to have a conversation with the Cleric, the rest of the party soon joined her. He took time to talk about pleasantries of travel and expressed great interest in the map of the Feywild that the Cleric showed him while offering the advice to enjoy exploring the Fairy King's Wood and to give little head to roads or maps. The Grand Duelist cut this conversation a little short and after a comedic episode, and some input from Xiv, he extended an invitation for the Party to come to the banquet at Castle Nightbreeze later that evening.
After the Dragon departed the party made themselves scarce to avoid being pressed for questions by the crowd and took to the back streets. This landed them into another encounter with the Red Smoke who tried to convince the party to leave the Warforged in their custody. A fight ensued and a cultist appeared from a building to watch the commotion, the rogue failed an attempt to bring him down and chased him away from the scene of the battle and the ranger quickly pursued her as well. The rest of the party stood their ground and defeated the street thugs, causing their leader to flee, and they questioned a survivor before threatening his life unless he left town. The survivor of the thugs agreed and offered up information wholeheartedly to the group. The Rogue and Ranger tracked the cultist to an abandoned building where they discovered illusion magic was concealing a long staircase that led underground.
