Session 14: Trouble in Kestel Report
General Summary
During the next part of their adventure, the party found a way to gain an audience with the lord of Kestel to further their investigation. Zalkin gained an audience at the castle as an evening storyteller, the lord was in great need of entertainment and the party used this as an excuse to move about the grounds. While Syndra and Narrin used minor magic to enhance the storytelling of the otterfolk, Craea and Iceworn snuck out of the main hall to move about the castle grounds and return to the library. They met a little trouble but eventually made their way to the room and encountered a ghost.
While the main group was finishing up their performance and being congratulated heavily, the rogue and the warlock found themselves in pitched combat. Iceworn tried to avoid hurting the spirit, sensing that it only lashed out against whatever hurt it but Craea was quite fearful and kept attacking. The main group was invited for drinks, food and given minor magic items as a gift on the lord's behalf, but they only interacted directly with the dark cleric as he explained the lord was gravely ill and could not be in their presence lest they fall victim to the deadly disease.
It was at about this time that Craea lit the room on fire and fled the library, rousing the guards to help. The castle underwent a bit of a panicked response but the fires were promptly put out. The party helped in controlling the damage and assisted the guards, except for Narrin the druid who had consumed too much good drink and instead used his breath weapon (force damage) on the fire which did little in the way of putting it out. Iceworn used the commotion as a cover to search the room and found the waning fragment's of the ghost's spirit ad took it with him, urging the party to leave the castle quickly. When they returned to the tavern Iceworn took the time to commune with the spirit and the party received information about the wreckage that they had encountered in the depths on their way to Kestel. They confirmed that the cult from Stronghold was involved and that a ritual had taken place that completely eradicated the souls of the dead travelers or otherwise used them as the fuel for a spell. Iceworn assisted the spirit in crossing to the other side, to the afterlife and received a strange magical item from his patron as a reward.
