Session 1: Introduction Report

Report by Campaign GM Shiftrex

General Summary

During the session the party started on their first mission with the intention to square up for the month's rent and start off their careers as professional adventurers in the Dagger Guild. They took a deceivingly simple request to investigate the catacombs under the city from a new opening that had been uncovered. In the process of their exploration, they discovered a lesser undead, a Shadow, and decided to press further into the tunnels.   Quite handily they avoided a pitfall that opened underfoot in the narrow caverns and lowered their party members down by rope to investigate the lower level. Quite UNHANDILY the Paladin failed to lower the Cleric down safely and they both tumbled some forty feet down to a lower level of the catacombs. The cleric identified this lower level as an ancient tomb, most likely visited by humans several thousand years earlier as it was a tomb belonging to the Night Guard.   Inside the group explored the tomb and followed a foul stench of rot that had been absent elsewhere in the catacombs. They encountered a large, smooth door that they could not unlock nor find any handle with which to pry. All they found were wide, circular markings that appeared to be scratches. The rogue licked the door and decided that the scratches tasted of iron.   Behind a door locked with sliding, stone rings they found suits of armor on display, enchanted against the effects of time in rank and file. Within there was a box where the group found a collection of magical items left from a time long ago. The Paladin received a ring that grants resistance against necrotic damage, the cleric received an orb that can see on the other side of doors and thin walls, the rogue received a dagger of unnatural sharpness and enchanted make. They pressed on further and happened upon a room that had been used for prayer and ceremony once upon a time but it had been ransacked, furniture destroyed and rubble-strewn about though strangely enough, a box full of silver coins was untouched.   In the final room, they found a grand mural of carved stone that depicted the great purpose of the military unit that was buried here. They were the very first ones that guarded the gates for the city of Stronghold. Upon examining the mural a hidden stone panel was found with three glass bottles of liquid (1 potion of lesser restoration, 2 healing potions) and a large, well-made iron cylinder. When a magical charge was applied to this cylinder it became a powerful magnet that they used to aide in opening the original stone door that they encountered when they first entered the tomb. However, as soon as the door was opened the party was overwhelmed with the stench of incredible rot and decay. They moved cautiously down a large hallway and encountered a staircase that was hastily trapped with wire, this was a simple task for the rogue to slip between and disable which allowed them to move down the staircase undetected.   At the base of the stairs, they peered into a large room, the main burial chamber where they saw a haggard figure with a mask resembling a large beak. He was buried in his work, making a large circle with markings associated with magic. The cleric identified this as the same markings that would be used for a Resurrection spell but there were several mistakes or rather there were several changes. The Rogue wasted no time and moved like a shadow around the pillars, getting as close to the figure as possible. The Cleric used thaumaturgy to cause a large rock to fall from the ceiling, destroying part of the magic inscription on the ground and the Rogue moved in to kill the figure with a single slice to his throat from the back.   When she drew her blade back it wasn't covered in blood like she expected, it was covered in a thick, black sludge that smelled of putrid decay.
