Duchy of Alryne

The Duchy of Alyrne (al-REEN) is a duchy within the Grand Duchy of Devarin. It is located in the north west, bordered on the west by the Snakefang River. The current Duchess is Elel Pyley, 23rd Duchess Alryne.

History

The Duchy of Alryne was established in 486 by Hilaraiob Pyley, daughter of the then infamous warlord Grether Pyley who had centralized power around himself following the conquest of the general region. Alryne continued the rule of House Pyley over the area, but also expanded the idea of a national identity, solidifying the idea of Alryne as an independent sovereign nation. She chose the title of Duke, taken from ancient historical texts as the name of old rulers. In 593, Alryne was absorbed into the Kingdom of Edror following a military conflict. In 643, Edror and its neighbor Drostan formed a political union, resulting in the formation of the Kingdom of Enerias. In 976, following the movement of the capital to the Duchy of Devarin, the Kingdom of Enerias became known as the Grand Duchy.

Economy

The economy of Alyrne largely revolves around its trapping industries, including the production of fur, leather, and hide goods. Alryne clothing is renowned the world over, and seen frequently in courts all across Apterra. An independent guild known as the Masters Guild controls quality of output and certifies merchants throughout the duchy if their goods meet a certain quality. These goods can be found with the guild seal on them, known as the Masters Mark.
