The Key to Knowledge

If only we had the knowledge to find the key and open the gate. Which, recursively, would give us that knowledge.
The Key to Knowledge is a myth surrounding a supposedly lost key, which when fitted into the right lock, would unlock all the knowledge in the universe for the benefit of any sentient being entrusted with this knowledge by the unlocker. For this reason, many are fearful of the Key, and at the same time aspire to gain it, or its knowledge themselves.   It should be noted that you cannot both unlock the gates of knowledge with the key and gain the knowledge yourself.   The rich will often pay to be buried in the place of origins, with a keyhole in their tombstones, in case the keyhole in question, and the Gate of Knowledge, is yet to be made.

Summary

The Key to Knowledge is said to be kept somewhere in, or near, the place of origins, where it would only be found by the person who would truly deserve it. Similarly, the Gate to Knowledge is supposed to be in the place of origins.   The rich will often pay to be buried in the place of origins, with a keyhole in their tombstones.

Historical Basis

There was at least one key that existed at the time, in fact, there are records which show that there were many keys. Most commonly house keys. Very few, if any, gates had keys, and most keyholes from the time have been destroyed. Therefore, it is likely that if any such Key and Gate existed, it is now lost to time.

Variations & Mutation

Some variations expand on the history of the gate, saying that everyone used to know everything, but the knowledge was lost as it put people in harm's way, by exposing people who could abuse the knowledge to it.
