Uraq

Uraq the southern desert land of spice and silk.   The Uraq enjoy the fact that Tarsis rules from a distance and the nobles rarely want to brave the heat and sand.

Origins

Culture

The Uraq people are a honorable, if harsh, people. They value loyalty, piety, respect for the traditions and wisdom above all. They are shrewd merchants, great caravanners and masters of oration, but above all they are courageous warriors and great horsemen.

Industry, Art & Clothing

The Uraq produce a large quantity of spices and silks suppling it throughout the known lands. Luxury goods including spices, ebony, silk and fine textiles were traded.   Cumin is the most commonly used spice. Other common spices include coriander, cardamom, chili, aniseed, bay leaves, dill, parsley, ginger, cinnamon, mint and cloves. Common meats featured in Uraq cuisine are pigeon, chicken and duck.

Relationship & Community

Ways of War

They practice a hand to hand combat akin to martial arts. They train with weapons that favor prowess over brute force like short bows, scimitars, daggers, and spears.

Languages

Uraqi: Another human tongue, Uraqi is very different from Old Prustan and even Westron, having originated in ancient Kellisan, far to the south. It is spoken almost exclusively in Uraq and along the coast of the Southern Sea (a relic of the fact that Uraq conquered most towns and cities along that coast long ago).

Geography

The Uraq desert lands offers an oppressively unpleasant climate, with high summer days hot enough to cook food without fire. Evenings bring cool temperatures. Temperatures in the desert can reach 120 °F and can dip into the low 30s°F during the night. Sandstorms are not uncommon. Colorful desert plant life exists, if not thrives, in the more temperate regions near the coast, and along the northern hills, where sickly bushes and centuries-old pine trees live a meager, pathetic existence.

Religion

The Uraq pay heed to a handful of gods including
  • Ahaar, Lord of Air
  • Harredda, Mistress of Natures
  • Inurath, Mistress of War
  • Juranis, God of the Open Sea
  • Niveral, God of Secrets
  • The Sisters of Death
  • They have little use for young god such as Lothian or gods of fate, as they believe that they craft their own fates by placing one foot or choice in front of the next.
