The Terran Federation

The Terran Federation is the largest nation in the galaxy, both in size and population, and one of the oldest human nations to still exist. It is an open and diverse place, home to many thousands of species and many more cultures. Such a state is naturally decentralized, with substantial power being granted to sector, system, and planetary governments. Redundancy is key, the idea being that no matter how much is lost, whether in territory, resources, or manpower, it can always be replaced. This leads to an overall mentality of quantity over quality, and despite that both human and alien life are greatly valued, human wave tactics are often the only real option.

Structure

Federal Semi-Presidential Democratic Republic.

Public Agenda

Peace, democracy, and tolerance are the ideals of the Federation. They promote scientific and societal advancement, but above all caution to ensure that any progress made mustn’t come at the expense of something else.

Assets

Controlling ten million worlds renders the Federation unimaginably wealthy, but this is divided amongst so many people that individual wealth is only about average for the developed world, with coreworlds being significantly wealthier and fringeworlds hardly counting as developed in the first place.

History

The Terran Federation has perhaps the longest and most turbulent history of all major Human Powers. Back in the Age of Terra, before humanity had any significant power outside of the Sol system, there was a huge war, often called WWIII, or simply the Great Stellar War. The old-Earth nations of America, Russia, and China had an almost apocalyptic nuclear war, destroying not only each-other, but most of the Northern hemisphere. Many European nations were able to shoot down most of the missiles aimed at them long before they impacted, minimizing the damage done to the small continent.   The EU, as well as remnants of the Southern hemisphere, began reconstruction. With most of the resources of their homeworld destroyed, they turned their efforts outwards. Utilising the vast asteroid-mines and Martian factories, they began to expand and colonise vast stretches of space, taking entire sectors under their rule with the recently-invented Alcubierre Drive, letting them functionally travel faster than the speed of light, without technically violating relativity. They attempted to further consolidate power back on Earth, bringing the entire planet back under their rule, though remnants of the previously warring nations fled, using enhanced versions of the Alcubierres to reach the other side of the galaxy within only a few decades.   In the coming centuries, the Federation expanded even further, taking most of the galaxy at least loosely under their control. While the immense psychological differences between species kept most aliens from wanting to join the federation, they accepted any aliens wishing to join under their vast rule. They held over 90% of human-occupied space, crushing most rebellions quickly enough.   In the mid-25th century, however, a huge wave of xenophobia and nationalism struck, large groups refusing to accept those outside the federation, hating aliens and the descendants of the Three Nations with far more fervour and zeal than would be liked by their more moderate and loose government. A huge and authoritarian rebellion arose in the Delta quadrant, trying both to crush the Three Nations and the Aliens, and to bring down the Federation and replace it with a strict dictatorship, accepting nothing but their own ideals and destroying all that opposed them.   The open-mindedness of the Federation almost doomed it, letting the radical ideology grow, not seeing it as a threat until it was too late. An interstellar civil-war broke out, the radicals against the loyalists, taking out many key beacons and shipyards, and almost halting travel for the loyalists. The rebels, however, were running out of resources and fighting a war on three sides. While there was little the Federation could do to retaliate once they lost their primary outposts, the rebels were also fighting against several alien groups, and the newly formed Tallon Empire.   After decades of struggle, the Federation shattered, Earth almost destroyed once more, and rebels and pirates popping up all over the galaxy, the Federation took a new approach. No longer able to deal with every problem that arose, and barely able to travel and communicate between their worlds, they had to focus their efforts on rebuilding and consolidating.   While humans’ aggressive expansion and resource-gathering meant that they were still the dominant force in the galaxy through the sheer size of forces they could gather, the immense distances they could send them, and the extreme conditions they could adapt to be habitable for them, the Federation was finally vulnerable, and started to lose its grip on worlds near the edge of their control.   Redistributing resources, they managed to reform and fortify Earth in case of further attack, and amass forces the size of which hadn’t been seen since the onset of the rebellion, now known as the Federal Civil War. They had a much looser grip on power, due to the slower travel and communications, and have been fighting many small wars across the galaxy ever since their reunification.

Demography and Population

Humans are the vast majority, though there are significant, if generally local, populations of aliens and various forms of augmented. (Rarely the Imperial Augmented, however, as on the rare occasion they leave the Empire, they tend to become independent political entities.)
