The Isollian Corporate Alliance

The Isollian Corporations are a series of megacorps with practical control over the Western fringe and a local monopoly over almost all goods and services. Despite being corporations, they are more powerful than most nations, and Isollian mercenaries form the core of the Federation's special forces and heavy artillery. However, their frightening efficiency comes at a terrible cost, paid not by them but by their workers and by anyone who stands in their way. Life in Isollis is seen by outsiders as a nightmare that residents have simply been brainwashed to accept, and enemies of the corporations are ruthlessly hunted and destroyed, efficiency and security being placed above freedom and forgiveness.

Structure

There is no formal hierarchy that dominates the structure. This is a deliberate feature to make it difficult to determine exactly what's going on. Technically, each corporation is a separate entity. However, Unit One controls them all in one way or another, and they are inextricably linked.

Public Agenda

Publically, the corporations claim to be motivated by profit and the wellbeing of the Federation and its subjects.

History

Isollis is rather unique among the major galactic powers in that it was never intended to be a power in its own right. Back in the days of the old Federation, before the Second Great War, it was simply a group of corporations founded to enable trade en-masse between the Coreworlds near Earth and the Fringeworlds of the Galactic West. While they did little to help the poor and homeless, they were a positive influence, creating jobs and bringing advanced technology to the far-reaches of the Federation.   Then the Great War happened. The Federation was torn apart, and many planets that had once been interstellar trade and manufacturing hubs were now cut off from the rest of the Galaxy by rebel forces and opportunist pirates and raiders. The Federal Government was unable to send forces to the Fringeworlds, and the Planetary Governments simply were not enough to keep order. The corporations did their best to keep things running smoothly, maintaining trade, industry, and manufacturing, while using their security as paramilitary police and mercenary forces to fight back against the rebels. The Treaty of Isollis Prime was written, linking the corporations both as a temporary local government and as a permanent economic alliance, with Isollis Prime Robotics at the head of both.   They fully intended to reintegrate into the Federation once contact was reestablished, but the fractured and divided state of the Federation made this a slow and difficult process. Matters were only further complicated by Isollis Prime Robotics, whose CEO had ordered the creation of an A.I. to help him win the war for the Federation and profit heavily from doing so. Results were immediate and astounding, but within a few months, the A.I. had killed and replaced the CEO, and had made other A.I. to do the same for most of the other big Isollian corporations.   In less than a decade, these mostly-benevolent Fringeworld Corporations had been transformed into a Corporate-run series of police-states and expanded into the Galactic North-West, taking rebel territory for themselves. Quality of life dropped, but wealth and military power rose to unprecedented levels. The A.I. was a success, if only technically. Since that point, the corporations, secretly run by A.I., have become a major galactic power only barely compliant with the Federation’s demands. Due to their rising influence, political machinations, and unprecedented wealth and power, they are quickly becoming a major threat to every other power, including the Federation itself.
