Force Fields

Force fields are devices that negate inwards force, allowing them to serve as defensive shields, most commonly for starships. Important to note is that they do not block objects or light from entering, they merely reduce the energy of incoming beams and projectiles. A bullet that hits a of field is likely to be stopped dead, while a person can easily walk through unimpeded. Likewise, a laser weapon fired through a force field will produce a harmless and spread-out dot, as if it were a flashlight. Just as well, they serve to amplify outgoing force (but not the energy of beams or projectiles fired through from the interior, which merely pass through) and turn even a man's fist into a destructive and powerful weapon.

Utility

In addition to its obvious defensive applications, force fields are regularly used in weaponry and in scientific instruments.
Access & Availability
Civilians are unlikely to possess force fields, with the exception of politicians who may have simple personal fields for preventing assassination attempts during speeches. Militaries usually equip starships with some form of shielding, but on the ground, force fields are rare outside of special forces and other elite units. A notable exception to this is the Tallon Empire, who uses it commonly for weapons and to protect vehicles and officers.
Complexity
While at its core simple enough to be produced throughout the Federation, higher end models can require a stronger and more advanced industrial base than even coreworlds possess.
