The Blight

Today's a green sludge that could peel the bark of any tree on contact, tomorrow, who knows? Feels good to be surprised once in a while, keeps you on your toes, doesn't it?
— Molk Supervisor Freidzen

They say life finds a way everywhere, and for bodies of water, that might be most true for the Blight. After being rendered practically unhabitable during the Termination, this land has suffered everything: droughts, acid rains, sudden freezes, etc. If Masters are not particularly welcome in any particular part of this wretched world, much less so in The Blight. The Creatures left to life are tough and highly adaptable, and do not take kindly to outsiders trying to alter the controlled chaos they have grown accustomed to.

Geography

With the general shape of a fruit tree, the Blight is one of the smallest oceans in the world, being in close contact with the continents of Cleria and Monar. It is in steady supply of rivers, whose deltas form the branches that provide that visual impression.

For an ocean, the main characteristic that differences the Blight is its extreme shallowness, with an average depth of 1300 metres. Not only that, but many areas, particularly those around the ruins of cities, can be walked on foot, although protection equipment is needed. The frequent apparition of stalagmite formations that peak through the ocean's surface serve as bases for Creature settlements of all sizes and composion. Many have resorted to this improvised landmasses, since islands are rare and often unstable, with the sea level around them shifting at a constant pace.

Ecosystem

Water in the Blight is overcharged with magic, which turns it into a highly mutable fluid. The composition of the seawater changes, sometimes turning more dense, more viscous, or more acidic. It's in this environment that aquatic and surface life must thrive. With the constant shifting of its properties, the Blight is only fit for the most resilient and adaptable species of the world.

Plant life is rare, but equally adapted to the harsh conditions. Still, the supply is low enough that most Creatures that depend on it for their diets have adapted to consume floating vegetal microorganisms.

Witches

For non-Creature life, living in the perilous waters of The Blight is a foolish choice. The lack of accessible food for anthropomorphic species leaves only a handful of roaming boat-huts to explore the span of the waters. Mages are much more commonly found on the coasts, however, where the effects of the blighted water lessen and the flow of rivers allows for a variety of crops to be sown. A noticeable lack of Masters brings with it a reduced number of Wisps, which has greater implications on Creature transport and relations to them.

History

Once a much larger and deeper expanse of water, this area was home to a great number of seafaring and subaquatic civilizations. When the Termination came, there were several nations underwater waging war for the control of the maritime routes and the strategic positions in the Ocean, previously known as the Coralline Ocean, for its high presence in this type of organism.

In one of the most significant points in the conflict, a mage known better by its title of Tide Overseer Cloway utilized a potent necrotic spell, with the objective of bringing down plagues and sickness to her rival cities. Instead, the spell went wild expanding its effect to the entire Ocean and irreversibly changing its waters into the unstable liquid that now occupies The Blight.
