Satyr Brewers

For a satyr the art of brewing is more than just a pastime, it is a way of life. Every satyr has something brewing or ageing, preferably both.   Though they know there is a rivalry between the bees and the sprites for the pollination of the flowers satyrs prefer to keep beehives for the honey they make. Satyrs have a unique relationship with the bees of their hives. They will often use the sprites to find a specific type of flower for the bees to gather nectar from so they can craft specific meads. These vary from fireweed to hibiscus.    They will usually allow the mead to age for about fifty to a hundred years before they tap it off to keg and store. Once it is in storage they rarely touch it for about another hundred years before they consider bottling it for sale, gifting, or just drinking. They test each batch every ten years before they tap it off.   Some satyrs craft a grape mead.  This is taken from the flowers of their own vineyards.  The bees let them know when the vines have been pollinated.  Often they can also estimate the size of the crop to come.  It is only an estimate because of predation from birds and other animals.

Other Benefits

The benefit of this is that you can have an unending supply of alcohol, provided you do not drink too quickly.  The larger the batch that is crafted the longer it will take to drink but also the longer it will need to age unless you use smaller barrels.

Operations

Tools

The primary tools of any good brewer are their barrels and press.  The size of the batch will determine the style of barrel needed.   The most common styles of barrels are hogshead, pony keg, half barrel, and quarter barrel.  When used for ageing it is preferable to use the larger barrels, that is unless the satyr is trying a new recipe and making only a small batch.   The press is an open-topped hogshead with a lid designed to just fit inside the barrel for pressing the fruit.  At the bottom there is a screened tap-off for the juice to drain through into another barrel.  The press is a screwtop with a large hand-crank set into a wooded frame.

Materials

What is needed to craft any wine or mead is honey/fruit, water, and yeast.  A large pot and a half barrel for mixing everything together before letting it brew.

Workplace

For the satyr, a brewhouse consists of a large stove or fireplace in which to heat the water needed to dissolve the honey in and to activate the yeast.  The room needs to be kept at a constant temperature during the brewing process or the yeast will deactivate destroying the batch.  Once the brewing is complete the mead or wine is moved to ageing kegs and kept in a cooler room.
