Half-Elf is the term for anyone of
Elven heritage, though some are called
Half-Orcs as a result of also having recent
Orc heritage.
Anatomy & Morphology
General description
Half-Elves typically are somewhere between Elves and their other parentage's height range and physical builds.
In all technicality, a Half-Elf does not require one parent or the other to be a full-Elf, nor both parents to also be Elven Hybrids. The term generally applies for if the individual has a grandparent who was a Half-Elf or full Elf.
Facial Characteristics & Features
A primary defining feature of any Half-Elf is their ears - shorter and blunter than an Elf's, but pointed all the while. Specific lengths of ear points vary between individuals, however.
Biology
Childhood
Between Humans, Orcs, and Elves, Elves have the longest lifespan, and also an extended childhood. Their hybrid descendents, however, do not live as long as an Elf would, though most Half-Elves are considered children for some sixteen to twenty-five years.
Adulthood
Once the Elven Hybrid, whatever their heritage, is an adult, they continue to age at the same rate as when they were growing up.
Society
Hybrids do not have a society of their own, though their homelife will often reflect their parentage. Several cultures, however, will pass on or impose the stereotypes based on the Half-Elf's parentage, which causes some social stress and stigmatic situationsMoreResearchNeededLyraine.
History of the Species
The Curious Case of Hybrids
While a Half-Elf does not need to be the child of an Elf or the child of two Half-Elves, the term is used to mark three or four generations of Elven heritage. The existence of the Elven, Orc, or Human, hybrids baffles most understanding of reproduction -
Dwarves, and
Goblins are unable to have mixed-species hybrid children either. The only known
Catfolk hybrids are Catfolk-
Dragonbloods.
The only species known to somehow have children with any
Sophonts species, with the exception of Dwarves and Goblins, are
the Supernatural and
Dragons.
At this time, scholars have no explanation, and the
Clerics have no divine explanation. Current speculations suggest the three species were created from the same sources when the Gods were more cooperative with each other, while the other species were created by other means. This explanation makes some sense with reality, but the religious debates it spawns causes issues.
Definitions
A handful of extremist purists insist on calling anyone who might have non-elven blood a hybrid. Unfortunately, only the most records-obsessed individuals can track sometimes up to two thousand years of records. These few groups, however, are very local and are quick to blame someone's shortcomings on some thirteen generations back being a Human.
In Tormyra, those groups have more influence when mages and their families rise or fall on the strength of their relatives. Said groups, however, have lost most of their standing when rulings members of the
Tormyra Royal Family include Half-Elves with highly successful reignsWriteAndResearchMoreLaterEwSupremistsAreInMyWorld.
