Porta Melia

The City

The city of Porta Melia was originally founded by the tribes of the Veil as a settled point through which they could trade their wares and accept goods from overseas. However after the fall the elves took it as their own and it became a naval military base known as Torech Úvano, ruled by the Mirapetor family.   After the war the city had been decimated and rather than giving it back to the remaining families of the Veil it was bequeathed to the Kingdom and ruled by the Marquis Demarche.   In 2041 OIO (350 years ago) the city was attacked by a great army from EL Puerto de Tortugas who ransacked the cities leadership and took it for their own.   The city is now led in careful balance by the four families, descendants of the original leaders of the pirate army.

Law and Defence

Each district has its own private guard operated by the families, paid for by their private businesses.   Many are thankful for their presence however they are also seen as corrupt due to their allegiances to the individual quarters.

Criminals

The largest criminal institution in the city as well as the land is the Gutter Men a clandestine organisation who operate out of Porta Melia.   The presence of the Gutter Men was recently devastated by the actions of the Heroes of Haelthen (Motley Few) who found their hideout and launched an assault, assisted by the city guard.   They are led by their charismatic, determined and ruthless leader Horacio Tarkin, who, it is said, is an immortal, having led the Guttermen since their inception.   Aside from this the city itself is known as the "Den of Vice" which fits perfectly due to the legitimised crime that is ever present under the supervision of the four families.

Trade

The city is a well-known home of several import export companies run by the individual families that rule. Is it well known that each company deals in both legitimate imports, but is also involved in the trafficking of various illegal items.   There are also a number of private fishing companies, many small and independent of the families, but of course the biggest are conglomerates made up of smaller companies that have been bought out by the families or are part owned.   Within the city there is a large call for fancy hotels and bars, and on the smaller end of the scale, taverns due to the large number of attractions within the city. This includes theatres, casinos and gaming houses, a variety of red clubs (brothels/burlesque and strip clubs).   There is a large market on the sea front where independent traders sell their wares, however the vast majority of trading is done within the city proper in luxurious stores or food markets.

Notes

In the centre of the city sits the Titaneum de Aequitatis (Titanic Stadium of Fairness) where events and theatrical performances are held. Once a year across 10th - 15th of Stenppenaar there are a number of competitions between the districts to see who comes out the champion, culminating in a 4 way game of Calcio Storico (Historical Soccer known as the Campionati di Quartiere (Neighbourhood Games) they date back to 2051 OIO.
