Kephala

A sentient species that looks similar to large Octopi except their bodies are longer and more elongated. They have 8 tentacles and are infamous for their shape-shifting and chameleon abilities.   They are native to the world of Pelagant. The great cavernous city of Moromu-Koki in the depths of the ocean is the greatest concentration of Kephala, but smaller villages and outposts exist. All Kephala settlements are found in twisting caverns in the depths of the ocean. Their main diet is fish, shellfish and arthropods like crabs and crayfish. They have domesticated some types of coral, a crayfish species, and two species of shellfish. Their main weapons are two long sharp spears made from bone, combined with a dagger made from a venomous cone snail. Their average lifespan is about 45 years.   Though they do not usually attack the surface dwellers, they are often the subject of fearful stories, especially stories about their Queen, Huhelawa, who is often represented as a demon like figure. Little do the people of the surface realise that Huhelawa is NOT some immortal who has ruled the Kephala for centuries, but is in fact an unbroken line of daughters who inherit the memories of their mothers.   This terrible reputation is not helped by the Melantha, renegade Kephala that have been exiled from Moromu-Koki for their abnormal violent tendencies. The Melantha have been known to prey upon the surface peoples.   The Kephala are one of the species uplifted and shaped by the Thitan Haluthan and some say his most favoured creation. This heritage enables Kephala to utilise the magic of the Ilios, though it is limited to a very few of which the Queen is one. Of all the shapeshifters created by Haluthan, the Kephala are the most accomplished.
