Goblin

Hailing from Old Cadrith, like so many others, goblins make up part of the Cadrithic Peoples. Cunning, witty, and small, goblins are uncommon, but not unheard of among even the smallest towns in New Cadrith.

Basic Information

Biological Traits

Goblins are only slightly larger than their gnome cousins, similar to a halfing, reaching between 3 and a half 4 foot tall, and weighing 40-45 pounds, and scrawny. A goblin's body is whip-thin and nimble, hiding a surprising durability and viciousness. Most goblins live shorter lives than halflings, around 60 years, but have plenty of children - goblin families are notoriously large. Short of this, goblins are renowned for their cunning and wit, both in their fighting and their words.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Goblins tend to live in litters until they mature at 15 years old, where they will start to drift away from their family unit and seek out their own circle of friends and companions outside of their kin - goblin families are hectic and overwhelmingly chaotic, and often live close to eachother, so communal childcare is another feature of goblin society. Goblin culture also emphasises size a great deal, with larger and older goblins naturally dominating attention and priority - which is often replicated with goblins who leave goblin culture often taking subservient roles to their taller companions, much to their confusion.

Facial characteristics

Goblins, unlike halfling and gnomes, have very sharp and pointed features, with impish toothy grins and long noses, though often with a twinkle in their red eyes. Many goblins sport tattoos, and their dark hair is often braided and woven in decorative patterns, with dyed colour stripes being commonplace. Their skin colour ranges from vivid greens to beige, to brown, to grey, and to near purples in places.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Goblins can be found just about everywhere across New Cadrith, though most commonly live in Great Cities and heavily urbanised areas, often creating their own Goblin Quarters as the population grows, or co-habiting with gnome families. While not as numerous as halflings, goblins are one of the most ubiquitous races throughoutt New Cadrith. Many goblins, seeking an easy way for wealth, often live in the wilderness, as part of bandit groups or orc bands.

Civilization and Culture

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Goblins are not as receptive to the Cadrithic Pantheon as other Cadrithic Peoples, but generally tend towards the Quintarchy of Change, seeing themselves as a revolutionary force. As a result, Lyrich, God of Plots is a common God for the goblins, alongside Equinax, God of Law and Nocthys, God of the Sea.
Compared to other races, many more goblins are followers of Finality, which accounts for many goblins being particularly shrewd, and sometimes criminal - the philosophy of "proving your right to life" appeals to many goblins who feel forgotten in their own families and the world at large, though the means of which they embody this are as varied as they are.

History

Native to Old Cadrith, goblins were among the Cadrithic Peoples that sailed to their new home, and quickly found themselves as useful scouts and hunter-gatherers as Firshold was being constructed. They also were excellent cartographers and spelunkers, leading to many goblins taking a liking to the carved tunnels of Highport and Carrog.
Goblin, gnome, and halfling societies often overlap, and where gnomes fill roles of tinkerers and engineers, and halflings as cooks, farmers, and business owners, goblins often take on roles of merchants, hospitality workers, and many business roles, as well as many forms of entertainment - the Gobot Theatre in Firshold, one of the first formal theatre venues, was a great source of goblin pride, and still remains a best-selling venue.
As their numbers grew, goblins spread out, and are generally commonplace, either in the countryside or in any number of Great Cities and towns, with some even tagging along with orc bands, or taking up residence in abandoned ruins.
