Out-Pack Wolves

This is an extraordinarily broad term for werewolves who do not belong to any of the officially recognized packs of the North American Werewolf Confederacy. To call them packless is a bit of a misnomer, as the process to become fully recognized Bachelor Packs is a time-consuming process wrapped in bureaucratic red tape so tightly it would make any political organization green with envy. As of the 2010 census (the separate one conducted for the Council of Supernatural Peoples as opposed to the census for humans) the number of packless wolves has officially marked the majority of the population and is regarded as quite possibly much larger due to lack of reporting from some who do not wish to be counted or designate a location - usually because they are inhabiting the territory of a pack without permission. This includes lone wolves, runaway and banished Wolf-blooded, small bachelor packs forming in the outskirts of other territories, and all of the progeny of these previous groups who were, therefore, not born into any of the Hereditary Packs.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Family names for out-pack wolves is a sticky subject, as there is a very structured naming convention among most of the hereditary packs. One of the key clues that a werewolf does not belong to a specific pack is they will have a singular surname when introduced to others, as opposed to Hereditary Packs naming convention of the pack name (the alpha's surname) then father's personal surname (ex: Martin Lopez-Vega of the Guadalupe Pack) or, in many established bachelor packs, a surname will be chosen, usually associated with the name of the pack (example: Gwydion White-Cerason of the White Mountains Pack).   Context clues are important, however, as the alpha family of a hereditary pack will have one surname, such as Alejandro Lopez, the youngest son of Alberto Lopez the alpha of Guadalupe Pack. Some packs, upon banishment, legally strip the associated pack surname from the individual. Commonly, the new surname chosen by the individual will have something to do with wolves, though not always.
