The moon holds serious historical and religious meaning for werewolves all around the world and even have The Werewolf Zodiac that is based upon the phases of the moon, but the human misconceptions about werewolves and the phase of the moon dictating their shift is a more complicated relationship. Werewolves utilize the magical energy of the moon, it is the source of their power and abilities, and so it is common for werewolves to have more magical energy around the time of the full moon, when the moon has its greatest magical potential, but that does not mean a werewolf must shift at this time. They are extremely likely to do so, as it is a good time to run and hunt, and many packs hold monthly runs surrounding this event and there are many who believe that marriages or mate bonds that are consecrated under a full moon are particularly lucky and/or fruitful. 
The moon has many associated magical attributes, but the cycle of rebirth is an important aspect that is a key theme of werewolf spirituality so much so that most packs have a lunar temple in their packlands. These buildings, sometimes referred to as spirit dens, are typically either embedded in the home of the alpha family or are free-standing buildings close to the main center of community activity. Many designs are circular and have the phases marked out either on the ceiling or the floor for congregants to sit according to their moon-sign and partake in communion with their packs and the moon as witness.
In addition to the spiritual beliefs about the moon, werewolves have a significant amount of magical lore attributed to this celestial body, as well, and make use of it during spell casting. They also make use of different substances that are attributed to lunar energies, such as selenite, moonstone, and the complex relationship with silver.
