Birthdays

Birthdays among werewolves are beloved events, mostly as an opportunity to feast and celebrate life. The acknowledgement for dates of birth are unique in that they are held based upon the sign of The Werewolf Zodiac rather than any actual date. If a werewolf was born in October and is a Nova they simply celebrate their birth on the new moon of October. In the instance that there is more than one day of their moon sign in a month, they can choose to celebrate on whichever or both, depending on the mood. It's typical for the dual celebration in the instances of young children, while the very old tend to prefer to select one day and leave it at that. One may assume it's simply due to the number of birthday celebrations they have already seen.   There is very little about the werewolf birthday, other than the imprecise date, that differs very much from those of other species. There is always food, since food is an important part of werewolf culture, but it typically is a general group of favorites of the birthday individual. There is cake and this particular custom can be extreme, as the entire pack is generally invited to celebrate. Since packs in the North American Werewolf Confederacy range between 17 and 257 individuals, the cake depends upon the population just as much as anything else. There can be a competitive nature about baking these cakes in the pack and it is considered an honor to be asked to bake a cake for someone's birthday as it is typically a family member. With the advent of some of the cake decorating trends online, the tradition of the hulking and obscenely decorative birthday cake has skyrocketed and it has become more common to commission cakes from bakeries or particularly talented individuals. Esmeralda Zamfir has been employed in such endeavors for several years and has had several photos taken of her standing on a stepladder to decorate the top of a birthday cake that is taller than she is.    Not all members of a large pack can afford to sport such a large cake and these outrageous confections are more frequently commissioned for pack alphas and their families or other notable individuals. The vast majority of werewolf birthdays tend towards close friends and relatives and a normal-sized cake with games and fun activities.   Lunar Communion is always observed as part of the birthday party, as Mother Luna is invited to celebrate the cycle of life with her children.

Culturally significant birthdays

The first birthday of any child is considered very important and has its own ritual similar to a human baptism in which the child is blessed in the light of their birth moon. At this time, a secondary father is named by the mother. This is typically a member of the child's mother's extended family, a dear friend of their father's, or in the case of polyandrous werewolves in which a woman has multiple mates, the man named is almost always one of the child's non-biological fathers, This man would be very involved in the child's life and, in the case for boys, would be there to assist in teaching him how to shift to his wolf form along with his father. In the case with girls, he would have a say in her marriage arrangement in a more limited form than her father's, but he would still have a say. This is considered to be one of the very few countermeasures to represent the will of a girl's mother in the matchmaking process in arranged marriages.   For boys, the fourteenth birthday among almost all packs in Europe and North Americais considered sacred. It is typically at this age that a boy, having been taught to shift by his family, would be presented to the pack as a potential member outside of his father's influence and household. There are several different rites for this purpose, but almost all of them involve the young man shifting in front of the pack as proof of his capacity, then a pack hunt to celebrate. In some packs, the child goes fully from child to man in that instant, but in many modern cultures the age of adulthood is 17 - 18 and many packs have boys between these two ages as potential pack members, which gives them a say in pack matters aside from their father's, but does not give them full pack responsibility. It is very common for a young man to choose his mentor at this time and this is typically another member of the pack who has similar interests or abilities that he wishes to learn from.    There is a similar date for girls, but it depends on the region. The practice of the quinceanera (fifteen) is common among packs in Mexico, South America, the Spanish Caribbean, and southern parts of the United States. In most other packs, the age is sixteen for this event, but there are a few in Europe that have bumped the age up to seventeen to follow their host human culture's acceptable norms for marriageable age. The young woman is presented to the world as a woman for the first time and there is dancing, music, a recital of the young lady's achievements, and it is considered a time for her to shine as, in many packs, the bidding for her hand in marriage begins the very next day, lasting for two days with the pack alphas, then for a third in which the father and beta father may accept or reject proposals on their daughter's behalf. There are very few Hereditary Packs that do not participate in this practice and, in many cases, the outcome has already been determined years before in private dealings with these leaders and already accepted in contract by both families involved. This is one of the many practices occurring in werewolf society that the Daughters of Leto  opposes as the practice of arranged marriage is far out of the norm for most human host societies and there have been significant claims against some packs ranging from child abuse to human trafficking related to these practices.
