Stimpak

An incredible medical device, a Stimpak is a pressurized needle that injects a large dose of enzymes and chemicals that jumpstart the body's immune and repair systems.   The exact chemicals that went into a Pre-War Stimpak have been lost to time, but researchers in the various wastelands have found combinations of naturally occurring plants substances can be distilled and mixed together to achieve a similar, if diminished, result. As such, Pre-War Stimpaks are often far more rare, and subsequently, expensive than a 'homemade' Post-War Stimpak.   Post-War Stimpaks do not boost the user's immune system. If using a Post-War Stimpak, the wound must be properly disinfected prior to use, otherwise the risk of infection increases.   Stimpaks are most useful if taken immediately after becoming injured, and are most effective for surface wounds. They can be used to heal major wounds such as a broken bone, but the effects are diminished, and severely diminished in the case of Post-War Stimpaks.   Stimpaks have limited usefulness to Ghouls, especially Ghouls who exhibit more necrotic tissue damage. Pre-War Stimpaks are the most effective for a Ghoul.   Pre-War Stimpaks can also be diluted with a sterile saline solution, providing a level of healing that is comparable to a Post-War Stimpak, but with the bonus of the immune system boost.   Stimpaks will dehydrate the user, as well as make them hungry. It is always best to use a Stimpak in a safe location or under medical supervision.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Stimpaks' main components are the needle, syringe, and gauge.   The needle on Pre-War Stimpaks often have a plastic cap on them, to prevent damage to the needle or an accidental needle stick. The syringe is made from steel casing and contains the medication. The gauge is a device at the top of the Stimpak that reads how much medication is left in any given Stimpak. Near the top is also the button that releases the medication after the needle has been successfully injected. It is possible to inject one Stimpak into multiple areas of the body to spread out the healing effects by releasing the button to stop the flow of medicine.   Post-War Stimpaks are functionally the same, but the protective cap is missing more often than not. The casings have usually been boiled or washed out with alchohol to sterilize them as much as possible before the Post-War compound was added to them.
