Dragonborn

The Dragonborn were a bipedal, reptilian and sentient race in Talamh. They resembled dragons but were mammalian in life cycle, hence the species' name. They were renowned for their innate understanding of the elements of creation.

Basic Information

Anatomy

A silver female of the species, appearing to be a Ecepodin.
Like most humanoids, Dragonborn are bipedal and have two arms. However, they differ from other humanoids due to some specimen having tails. Strangely, the tail is considered a dominant gene, so there are occasions where dragonborn have tails and sometimes do not. Despite being mammalian, Dragonborn resemble reptiles with their scaley skin, claws, and skeletal structure. They come in a variety of colors, which correlate with different elements.   Their organ structure is also quite different from other humanoids: dragonborn have an additional breath gland above their stomach which allows them to project things like fire, electricity, acid, etc. from their mouths. Their organs are thicker, allowing them to stomach harsher foods. The bone structure of dragonborn is also denser, as well as their muscles, which allows the dragonborn to be much stronger, at the cost of also being heavier than other bipedal species.

Genetics and Reproduction

The greatest difference between dragons and dragonborn is the fact they are mammalian. Dragonborn practice intercourse between a male and female. Once the female is pregnant, she carries a developing child within her womb for a period of ten months. Often dragonborn have one child per pregnancy, but it's not uncommon to see them bear twins. Once the time of conception comes, a mother will undergo a horrendously painful process of live birth. Hence, the name: they are a lizard-like species, but experience live birth.

Growth Rate & Stages

Once a dragonborn is born, they start to grow rather quickly. They manage to start walking after a month from their birth. By the age of 3, they get to the size of a 10-year-old human. Their puberty years are far more extreme than the other races, with the young dragonborn going into rages and general ferocity from rapid emotional and physical growth. This calms down by the age of 15, when they become full-on adults.

Civilization and Culture

Gender Ideals

There is surprisingly an equality of gender within the society of dragonborn. They see any gender being capable for generic work or being able to rise in the ranks of their government. They value charisma and strength. However, this does not mean gender is simply ignored. On the contrary, dragonborn find their birth gender to be the most vital part of their identity. As explained by an Ecepodin, named Idraka:
"We do not waste our lives contemplating our purpose and identity, that was developed in the womb. The gift of birth shows us what we are in rawest form."
With this in mind, the male and female dragonborn grow up knowing their roles. This is particularly important for the female dragonborn. They are seen as blessed in gifting life to future generations.

Common Dress Code

Dragonborn try to avoid being unorthodox in their dress code in order to fit in with other humanoids. However, because of their horns, claws, and tails, often they find themselves resorting to different dress and armor for their legs, hands, and head. Some dragonborn use loosely fitting robes to give easier movement with their tails (if having them). If they lack a tail, some will use pants, but will exclude shoes, as they are uncomfortable and worthless due to having protective scales for their feet. It also allows them to use their feet claws. A similar principle is used for their hands, which have claws.

History

For thousands of generations, the dragonborn purpose themselves as beacons of the elements in magic and the sword. How they decide to use it has been the subject of great wars and terrors.
According to dragonborn Ecepodin tradition, they were formed by the god Bahamut on the top of Mt. Zlaskuh around 1A 100. Bahamut created them out of the different elements, proving his own faith and ambition could create the miracle of life. He gave the dragonborn a mission: to tap into the magical arts of Talamh and share it. The dragonborn made the wastes of Icenglav their homes. In 1A 500 Durkoth, the Dragonborn King, rose to much prominence, but died without an heir, and eventually were overtaken by the Dwarves. After 600 years of Dwarven rule, an 800 year gap arose were they had no king. Then, the Ice Wizard named Nicolai Korolva took over the land in 1A 2003, and his children ruled over the dragonborn for several millennia.   Despite human rule for thousands of years, the dragonborn have learned to adapt and keep to their original purpose of sharing elemental power through the world. Indeed, some have found themselves becoming adventurers or grand wizards. However, due to lacking a proper homeland, some dragonborn have decided to use their magic for evil purposes. Some have even listened to the deception of Tiamat, the wicked goddess of chaos, and ignored the purposeful Bahamut. This struggle defines the dragonborn for a thousand more years to come...

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Dragonborn are unique for a strange elemental correlation with their scale colors. Like true dragons, the dragonborn can eject elemental power from their breaths. Depending on their scale color, this varies wildly:
  • Copper and black dragonborn can spew acid from their breaths.
  • Blue and bronze dragonborn can spew electrical energy from their breaths.
  • Red, bronze, and gold dragonborn can spew fire from their breaths.
  • Green dragonborn can spew poisonous gas from their breaths.
  • Silver and white dragonborn can spew cold clouds from their breaths.
