Chapter 5 - The Battle of the Glacier
General Summary
The party adjourned back into the presence of King Edmund, receiving reward for their efforts. It was here that Aethelflaed decided to remain in the city of Bexton, to keep to the relief effort. Edmund and the druid Nilrem then convened with the party. They discussed how they will not be able to take the Great Heathen Army by themselves: they would need to get the help of the other Petty Kings. The party agreed, and handled the quest in calling the other nations of Albion to aid against the heathen forces. Uhtric Godwinson was given the message from Edmund, to give to Aethelred of Feller's Rock, and keep it secret.
The party gathered supplies over the course of the week for their newest quest and began their journey down the Silver River. They were given a boat to travel downward, to the city of Feller's Rock, for it would be faster than on foot. The adventurers took the longship and cruised slowly within the fog. John tried to snatch the message for Aethelred, but Uhtric finally stood up against him and berated him for his immorality during their journey.
Along the river way, they were encountered by a Danen ship going up north. The party battled the ship, with Ardor lighting it aflame and the party using magic and boarding to slay the Danen. They captured one, named Ulf, and questioned him. Ulf mentioned how he was a scout, and was meant to go up to Bexton to raid. Ulf warned them that there was a Danen blockade further south, led by the giant Gilshmerg. The party ventured south, and found a glacier around the river, and about a hundred Danen men. They tried to trick their way past the blockade via disguises, but it was seen past, and the party quickly caused as much damage as possible while escaping.
They travelled south past the blockade. On the trip south, John was open with the party: he was not just one man, but a second, split half of himself was roaming across the land. This "Second John" was dangerous. John mentioned how the split worked: he was left with the logical side of himself, while the other half was the emotional, zealous self. John mentioned how it was the work of Bghonah who split him, and desired to reverse the process once and for all. Which means they needed to find Second John.
After days of travel they arrived at Feller's Rock, where they found the sword Pendragon lodged in the stone of Fell. Somehow, Uhtric became unnerved seeing it, and purposefully ignored it, while the other adventurers tried and failed to pull it to see if they would become High King. Uhtric went to the court of King Aethelred and delivered the message. He then informed the king that the Danen threatened his city. Aethelred then answered, stating he would come to the aid of Bexton, if only to eliminate the giant encroaching on his lands.
Thus the men of Bexton and Feller's Rock assembled a host. The adventurers headed before the king's army, and eliminated some scouts alongside the river. They travelled on horseback to the glacier, along the river, until they saw before them the Danen armies. They waited hours, until the men of Feller's Rock and Bexton joined together. The Danen Army and the Albions engaged in a battle over the Silver River and the glacier. As the fighting happened, the adventurers snuck into the glacier, finding the frost giant Gilshmerg and his Winter Wolves.
Frost Giant by Justin Sweet
The Giant Gilshmerg, a terrible foe against the heroes of Albion, but ultimately slain by Uhtric as one of his greatest displays of his prowess.
The battle was intense, as Ardor shot fire at the giant, Eogun and Uhtric engaged the giant in up close combat, and Caoimhe summoned Dire Wolves to deal with the Winter Wolves. It would be Uhtric who finished the Giant off, smiting him in holy grandeur and taking the giant's belt. The party looted the lair, but Ardor was more concerned about a prisoner. He went to the cells and met with his brother Alvor. Alvor was strangely grateful to see his brother, and apologized to him for the falling out. Alvor explained that it was his fault all this was happening: he was searching for an old Dwarven artifact called the Bifrost, capable of transporting entire armies across the land. He was captured and tortured by Second John and Morgainne, who were on their way toward the mountains, to the lost city of Duran-Golgen.
It was there the party had to travel to. Before they left, they met up with the armies of Albion, who won but took heavy casualties. King Aethelred rewarded the adventurers, and told them his gratefulness. Before they departed (going up to Kirkwall for some quick business), the King asked them to tell the other cities to join with him. For they needed allies desperately against the Danen...
