Chapter 3 - Siege of the Black Knights

General Summary

After slaying many spiders, the party proceeded to question Seldwig as to where the Black Dragon base was. He would proceed to lead them, but noted that there was a lot of soldiers there and that getting through them would not be easy. The party would travel to the abandoned dwarven fortress in Caleah, where the Black Dragons had set up their base. Their attack plan involved distracting one of the guards and making a confusing sound of horns. Riley would proceed to throw rocks at a fire nearby, driving one of the guards to confusion and to eventually spot him. Riley would slay him with his rapier, and the party would be spotted.   The Black Dragons and some of the scouts attempted most of their assault on Riley and Gilliam who were advancing fast towards them. Slytoff fired his fire bolts, and Wulfric made charge against the knights, swinging his great-sword like a brute. The battle lasted less than a minute as the party, with luck on their side, rolled through the camp in a triumphant skirmish.   On the body of a dragolok Slytoff found the key to a treasure chest. Gilliam would raid some of the tents for loot, and Riley grabbed some weapon caches, noticing they were Lysandan soldier weaponry (and probably stolen). Gilliam grabbed some notes, given to Sir Edward, that revealed some of the Black Dragons' plans, as well as showing that Sir Edward was working under someone else. Then, with Slytoff's key (and Slytoff doing some trickery with a fog cloud to fool Gilliam into thinking he was using magic), they unlocked a treasure chest and found a cache of loot and supplies.   Riley began to distrust Seldwig Lightfoot, thinking he led them into a trap and noting his actions have been terribly suspicious. Seldwig defended himself, telling Riley that he was simply showing them the encampment and had no idea Sir Edward was not there. Riley dropped his accusations, but remained skeptical. Then, along with the letters, the party determined they needed to go to Urshlon Tower, in the far south of the forest of Caleah.

The Party

Riley Woodhame: Riley Woodhame, human fighter and warlock, is a member of the Hearthstars (an organization based on gathering information under Amagus' teachings). His search for power and knowledge led him to find the Lady of the Lake, giving him an inkling of control over his own fate.
"The Amazing" Slytoff Han: Slytoff Han is a magician! A gnome wizard, he seeks to find funding to create a magic show and has traveled around County Ellis to show off his skills for potential audiences.
Wulfric Cisboren: Wulfric is a human fighter, who hails from Obesfeld, and a former housecarl. He appears to be a man of the north, covered in furs. Recently he has been talking more in a Norden accent, and has been behaving more like the Dwarves of North in his fighting style.
Gilliam Wulfstan Maydestone: Gilliam is an aakocra swashbuckler, as well as an urchin that grew up in the city of Ebenwald. With his skills with the blade, he seeks higher up contracts to fill his pockets.
Tequila "Teq" Cambow: Teq is a cleric of Amagus, devoting his life and services to the god. He was introduced to the party by the local bishop of Silver Town, searching for field experience and for building his faith.

Rewards Granted

On the bodies of the Black Knights, the party could have collected the following but only found the Black Key, for many of them failed to make proper investigation:
  • 6x Shortswords, wizard staff, 2x shortbows, 20x arrows, 2 sp per bandit, 1 gold piece on the wizard, black knight satchels, leather armor. Strange Black Knight key.
In the treasure chest found in the Black Knight tent, they found plenty of treasure for themselves to collect:
  • 1300 sp, 110 gp, 2x potion of healing, Scroll of Feather Fall, Horned Helmet
Notably, the party gave Wulfric the Horned Helmet, which notably would boost his defense due to the bronze horns added to the sides of them. It also completed some of his Norden looks, interestingly enough.

Character(s) interacted with

Seldwig Lightfoot: A halfling ranger, he is a self-proclaimed forester of Lysandus. He is not the most competent character, but he knows the landscape well. Unfortunately, a bit of mistrust has been brewing between him and Riley due to circumstances.

Notes

The notes given by the "Dominator", Sir Edward's apparent boss. The party has begun to think that Sir Edward's assault on Lady Joyce was not the intended result. Whatever is going on for them, they'll need to continue to uncover.
Show spoiler
CORRESPONDENCE: May 6th. The old dwarven mine in western Caleah is secure? Excellent. Dispatch a few dragoloks and use the kobolds to mine for coal and silver. -Dominator   CORRESPONDENCE: May 8th. Ha! You fool. You think killing Joyce Foswell would work? Why don't you just sabotage the wedding instead? Target the cake or something less protected. I doubt Lord Foswell would even bother hiring top talent for that. Killing the Lady should be your last choice for delaying this wedding, lest they know about our position so close to their city. -Dominator   ORDERS: May 12th, we move camp to Urshlon Tower south of here. Sir Edward and scouts will go ahead and investigate, per Dominator’s request. Until they return, guard treasure and supplies.
