Chapter 11 - The Mines of Brymoor

General Summary

The adventurers made their way into the castle of Brymoor, where they were confronted by four royal guards blocking their way to protect King Harold with their lives. With some convincing by Ardor and Uhtric, they stood down as long as King Harold was not killed. The party then entered the throne room of Harold Ebenwald, but saw he was gone. Trygge the Torturer, a Danen wizard, told the party that he was gone and had escaped the city. Trygge then sent the knights in the throne room to fight off the adventurers, and to the surprise of the party, Harold Ebenwald descended from the rafters to try and stab Uhtric.   A battle began in the throne room. Ardor sent a fireball against Trygge and some of the knights, and Caoimhe blasted them with a cone of cold. Trygge retaliated with the cold cone. John then sent an Insect Plague to overcome the Danen warriors with locusts, killing many of them from the swarm. Trygge was also killed during the assault, while Harold Ebenwald was knocked unconscious. He would be awakened, and questioned. Harold gave resentment toward his brother Uhtric, saying he was ignored by his father for Uhtric's disappearance. Harold expected Uhtric to have him executed, but Uhtric showed restraint and only had him imprisoned, until the time would come. From that point, however, Uhtric became the rightful lord of Brymoor.   The adventurers took the keys from Harold and went down to the abandoned dwarf mines in the city with the company of Nilrem. It grew darker and darker, as the party began to suspect that they were entering places where the abyss had crawled from. Until at last, the party was bombarded with more of Tiamat's army: black abishais descended upon them, blasting them with areas of darkness and attacking them with their swords. Nilrem became a mammoth to drive back the abishais while the rest of the party used the darkness to their advantage and killed many of them. Within seconds the battle was over.   Which came the next tricky part: the forge. The party came to a bridge, seeing a chasm underneath and also seeing the forge across from it. The adventurers approached the forge, when the abishai Qenlynn appeared before them, mocking them. She told them that she had a "present" in store for them, and left the party with a Balor who descended from the abyss below them. Uhtric rushed to forge the sword, John cast Protection from Good and Evil on himself, and the party readied themselves for a battle.   The Balor stroke with his sword and whip, hitting them with fire and lightning. Ardor, however, used Summon Minor Elementals to blind the Balor with smoke mephits, and then took out the Horn of Shalvalla they gained long ago, blowing it to bring upon Dwarven warriors to their aid to come and fight the demon. The demon was bombarded by attacks, trying to wound the adventurers while blinded, and eventually was overwhelmed by the battle. Nilrem shot a ray of cold at it, but it was ultimately Caoimhe that destroyed the creature with a Blight spell. The Balor was sent back to the abyss whence it came, and the party reforged the sword Pendragon.   Now there was once last step: to stop Gromherjek and Morgainne at the summit of Mt. Magus.
