The Barrens

The "Barrens" is a term the Kindred of Chicago apply to any area within the city where they have no particular desire to go. This can be for many reasons, including lack of suitable Vitae, danger, a high police profile, or simply because there is nothing of interest for them there. Areas outside Chicago with nothing of interest, primarily the suburbs, are called the "Outlands".

There are several general locations within Chicago that are considered part of the Barrens. Museums with a heavy tourist crowd, the various graveyards around the city, and the stockyards.

The outskirts of nearby Gary, where the steel mills closed down long ago, is now a rusting field of debris. Its proximity to central Gary, with its few remaining areas of importance, qualifies this area (known as the "Wastelands") as part of the Barrens rather than the Outlands, even though Gary itself is considered by some (including Lodin and his supporters) as part of Chicago's Outlands.

Despite the name, the Barrens do host the occasional Vampire. Nosferatu may be obliged to make their Havens here because of their appearance. Kindred on the run have also been known to go to ground in the Barrens. A few have even used the areas as a power base. In general, though, the Kindred avoid the Barrens
