The Tunnel between worlds

Inspired by the Anime and manga series 'Made in the Abyss' by Akihito Tsukushi and published by Takeshobo.
Excerpt from the diary of Sir Michael Hedward: "Having established basecamp at the rim of the tunnel today we made initial scouting forays into the abyss, scouts returned an hour ago, citing progress was slower than expected due to dense foliage and increasing humidity which invited bugs of all kinds to plague them"
The tunnel between worlds is a perilous place, all manner of strange beasts can be found here
"Scout group C have not come back, it's been three days and we cannot pick up their trail. I just got back from the search myself, those plants make any progress fight for every step"
However, it isn't just the beasts in the tunnel you should worry about.
"we found them. Who knew plants could do that? strung up on vines like that. The men are shaken, we have been wondering this place to for a week and still everyday we are finding something new just in this top area"

Geography

A gaping tunnel going down deep into the earth and connecting to the Underdark and vice versa from below. The tunnel has never been fully traversed by a sentient race and as such is still largely unknown. In the Underdark the tunnel is connected to a great mountain which reaches to the roof of the Underdark.

Fauna & Flora

Due to the variety of light levels, climates and huge amounts of magic present mean it is home to the widest and at times strangest mix of flora and fauna present in the world.   Flora: The area imediately at the entrance, with access to the most sunlight and temperate climate is home to a variety of plants, with many commonly known shrubs, flowers and trees present. At the 1 mile mark light levels are lower and the humidity rises, with dense tropical forests in which the taller trees take all the sunlight (only reaching them at late morning to mid afternoon) and transfer that energy down to the dense foliage below. Beyond this few have gone, even less have returned from.   Fauna: Within the first mile can be found dear, rabbits, squirrels, wild hogs and other widely known creatures. Some predators such as wolves and bears will frequent the area but few make it a long term home. At the mile mark one finds wild cats and monkeys among the trees, predatory birdes and snakes are a constant threat to those exploring the area.

Natural Resources

Explorers to the area have discovered many rare and previously unknown species of plant which they sold for a great profit. Magic crystals can also be found in great quantities, it is only due to it being so remote and dangerous a place that it has not been mined out.
