A Week of Tricks, a Week of Masks

Week of tricks is a holiday lasting 7 days which is celebrated only in one place, Viatys, the city of a thousand faiths. During this period of time, anyone who enters the city will be influenced by miracles of gods of mischief. Said miracles hide their identity, their faces, and clothes, behind a mask and a robe, which change depending on if they pranked someone or they were victims of someone's prank.

Masks and robes

As soon as one places their foot within the walls of the city during the Week of Tricks, their body is covered with a black robe and a mask. As long as they are within the city, their true height, name, voice, and race will be impossible to recognize. The only thing that can break this spell is if the two people both want to reveal their identity to each other. In such a case, they will both see each other normally. This is used both by family members and friends and also people who want to show someone that they trust them.

Types of masks

During the Week of Masks, one can see three types of masks around the city:

Observer

The most common of masks during the first day of the holiday.
They are round white masks, with big eyes and circular mouth carved within them in the expression of surprise.
They are worn by the people who haven't yet fallen victim to anyone's pranks or haven't pranked anyone yet. It often doesn't take long until that changes.

Coyote

Golden masks taking on the shape of a smiling coyote.
Worn by successful pranksters. They quickly become a target of other would-be jokesters who want to "dethrone" their wearer.

Demon

Red masks warped in a grimace of anger and sadness.
Worn by everyone who fell victim to the prank.

Judging others by their clothes

Not only masks change their look as the holiday progresses.
Each time one manages to prank someone, a golden orb shows up on their robe. On the other hand, if they fell victim to someone else's prank (or their own), a red orb shows up instead.

The beginnings of the holiday

With at least 14 different religions based on the belief of gods of trickery and mischief, the inhabitants of Viatys knew they would have to keep track of every holiday related to them to protect themselves and their belongings. To avoid confusion, the city council started negotiations with the heads of each of the biggest cults. After a month of their talks, they finally came up with an idea that excited the gods so much, they helped with making it possible. Instead of many different holidays spread around the year, within the city, there would be one week focused on pranks, jokes, and smaller and bigger acts of mischief. Outside, the yearly traditions would remain as they were up to this point.

Four winners

At the end of the week, gods choose four people who will get blessed with good luck for the next year. Those four "champions" are chosen based on four categories.   The ultimate Coyote is a title given to a person who manages to prank someone and never falls victim to prank throughout the whole duration of the week. If there is more than one contender to this title, the winner is chosen based on the length of time they wore the mask of the Coyote.   The sad Devil is the biggest loser of the week. The one who fell victim to the most pranks and never managed to trick anyone else. Even gods of mischief feel pity. Trying to get this title on purpose disqualifies one from getting it.   The one who has experienced everything is a title given to one whose robe is decorated with most orbs.   The equilibrium is the hardest title to get. To get it, one needs to have an equal number of red and golden orbs on their robes.
