Celestial Sandbox

Before time, before space, before anything intelligent enough to remember existed, there was the void. Absolute nothingness, stretching through eternity, and yet not existing at all. Then, seemingly without rhyme or reason, life came to be. In the black void that was the universe, the first Celestials popped into existence. Immortal beings of immense power and limitless abilities, these lovers of life and creation set forth to create the universe, building planets, solar systems, and galaxies out of the cosmic rubble which seemed to float on through infinity. As time marched on and the Celestials' designs grew in ambition, the first sapient mortal races began to appear. Emerging on planets stationed at ideal locations around the billions of suns dotting the Universe, these races took many shapes and sizes, forms and colors, with cultures as diverse as the stars in the sky or fish in the sea. In the modern era, this Universe, which the Celestials refer to as the Celestial Sandbox, is a place of awe and wonder. A universe where some civilizations leap between stars, others conjure great magic, and yet others still exist in the primordial stages of prehistory. Though it may sound like paradise, it is far from it—while the Celestials differ on many things, the one thing they share in common is that all the sentient races have free will. They live, eat, fight, and die, all according to their own actions, and it is these actions which define the shape of the Universe.
