Myth of Dragon Mountain

Much of this myth has been lost to time, as it was a legend even before the Great Calamity. There is a mountain on one of the Floating Islands that is called Dragon Mountain, because even from the ground, the land and mountain itself looks as if a dragon is roaring to the sky. It is considered a sacred place for all air dragons and they often journey there to meet and exchange stories and memories.

The myth spoke of a day when Dragon Mountain would awake and would rain fire down on the land below, for it was said to be the body of a great and powerful dragon that was there in the days when the gods formed the world. The reason this dragon was turned to stone has long been lost, but the day of fire is still remembered.

Many historians of dragonkind and birdfolk alike wonder if the day of fire spoken of was the Great Calamity, as the world burned with such ferocity. But dragons keep tightly held their desire to take back their language and their tongues and wonder if perhaps, in their hour of greatest need, if the stone dragon within that mountain might awaken to help them.

Humans have a different view of this myth, seeing it as a reminder of how powerful the dragons are. Historians among them wait in apprehension for the day when the dragons come to take from them what they have gained over the last hundred years. They believe that dragons think of them as upstart lesser beings that must be put down to the proper place in the world. Myth or no, when that island passes overhead, villagers tell their children to stay inside and they watch as it goes, waiting to see eyes open and wings take to the sky.
