Animal Speech
One of the major things nearly lost in The Great Calamity, Animal Speech is the language that all animalfolk share. As it is a mixture of human speech and animal sounds, it has different dialects among the various animalfolk ethnicities.
During the Great Calamity, those that stayed behind to take books or other knowledge with them died in the process as dragons swept across the continent taking out cities. A handful did manage to escape, but much of the writing of the time was lost to the fires. As a result, Animal Speech has been partially lost to time, leaving behind mainly the conversational portions of the language.
Linguists among the animalfolk have been able to piece together a large portion of the language and keep it alive still, but there are still surviving texts and words that no one alive knows the real meaning of.
What is perhaps the most puzzling of all is that when the birdfolk finally resigned themselves to having to ask Fauna dragons who had particular skill with languages for help, they too found that they had a difficult time piecing together the words that couldn't be translated. Like the Dragon Tongue, Fauna dragons are also unable to grasp portions of it, even once they learn and hear it from an expert. The suspicion is that portions of Animal Speech came from the Dragon Tongue and as that is a forbidden language now that cannot be spoken by anyone, it would also make sense that these words were borrowed and therefore cannot be spoken either. This has never been confirmed, but is perhaps the only explanation. The only hint that this could be true is that when any one of these words is spoken in conjunction with the use of magic, the crystal in use will flare as though it is attempting to power a spell that cannot go off.
