The Festival of the Two Moons

The Festival of the Two Moons is celebrated by the Coran people of the Baradan River basin during the dual full moon. Although there are very few written records of this tradition, it is believed to go back as far as the 800s AvGa.   The Festival of the Two Moons does not always include any particular ceremonies or rituals and the order of events in the festival changes depending on the village and region you are in. There are two things that the festival consistently includes across time and space: dancing, and the crowning of the King and Queen of the Two Moons. In some villages, it also includes a mass or other religious gathering, although these are uncommon.   The crowning of the King and Queen of the Two Moons is one of the main events of the festival. These are honorary titles given by the community to one of its members, though sometimes they are won. Although there are traditionally no requirements to be chosen, some villages choose the prettiest or stronger. Because of this the kings and queens to mainly be teens and young adults. While the king and queen generally do not have any real duties, in some villages they are the village's representative to the local noble, although this is rare.   Once the king and queen have been chosen they are crowned by the last seasons king and queen. The crowns look slightly different depending on the time of year. During the spring, summer and fall, they are typically made of fresh flowers and plants and during the winter they can be made of dried flowers and plants or tree branches. Recently some villages have acquired permanent crowns made of metal, wax, fabric, or wood. After the "coronation" the new king and queen begin the dancing, which goes on for hours typically ending at dawn.
