Shian

The Shian people live in the Desert of Shian, their ancestral home. Sadly many people are leaving the desert from cities like Kiara, the capital of Isendree, or Barani, a major port in Nyrona. This is caused by the many food and water shortages in the region due to decreased trade with the people pushed by the governments of Isendree and Nyrona.

Naming Traditions

Family names

Family names are taken from the mother's name and adapted depending on the gender of the child. For example, if a mother's name was Asha her son would be given the family name Ashira and her daughter the family name Ashara. When either child marries they will typically keep their family name, although some clans hyphenate or combine the two family names. Traditionally no one ever takes the family name of their spouse, occasionally a man or woman living outside of the desert will take the name of their spouse, but this is very uncommon and frowned upon.

Other names

Shian children are given two middle names, a boy is given the first names of both his grandfathers, and a girl is given the first names of both her grandmothers. Although the order does not typically matter, they are usually given in age order. This makes tracing ones family tree, which is very important in Shian tradition, very easy and accecable to the average person, even those who have moved away from he desert.

Culture

Common Dress code

Traditionally Shian wear long loose-fitting robes and headscarves, regardless of gender. The cut, style, and coloring of the item often differs between genders, clans, and locations.

Major organizations

Because they are a nomadic people, they have few large organizations, but there is a small city on the southern coast where the remnants of the Shian government resides. This small government mainly works with the governments of Isendree and Nyrona as the ambassador for the Shian.
