The War of the Necromancer
The War of the Necromancer began as an internal conflict in the aging Kingdom of Alberon. In 966CE Patriots of the kingdoms of Caellaech and Dumbria raised their banners in rebellion due to mistreatment by the Alben Nobles who ruled their lands. During this time the Federation of Costadoro and the Katerian Empire began having skirmishes between their navies over control of trade lanes and philisophical differences. The Katerian Empire was drawn into the conflict in Roakland at the request of the rebels.
During this time the Kingdom of Yovakia joined with Costadoro in order to stay independent from the territorial ambitions of the Katerian Empire. Due to the belligerence of the Costadoran ambassadors to the Empire as well as an overly ambitious young Emperor, they prematurely declared war on Costadoro and marched their legions through Alberon into Yovakia. After levying their own troops the Costadoran Federation met them in the plains of Yovakia and engaged in an extended campaign of battles.
At this point, seeing an opening the Katerian Empire's defenses, the Kotimaan Elves marched from the north in order to attempt to reclaim lost territory, as well as avenge the death of their last King. In 968CE the King of Alberon was executed by St. Malcolm and a council of nobles. Afterward they surrendered the sovereignty of their nations over to the Katerian Empire, and joined the war effort. The new influx of veteran troops was enough to begin pushing the Costadorans and Kotimaans back. Through 2 more bloody years of warfare the legions pushed through to the south enough to lay siege to the Costadoran capital.
It was at this time that a Yovakian Arch-mage named Vizael Molder entered the fray. Angry at the treatment of his nation by both the Empire and the Costadorans, he completed a ritual turning himself into a lich. Using his immense well of arcane power he began raising the dead from all sides of the war. He unleashed a plague that would devastate the living and swell his army to enormous sizes. Initial reports were ignored, and the army laying siege to the Costadoran capital was caught between its walls and the hammer of the Undead. They washed over both the army and the city with impunity, razing it to the ground. The horde then turned away from Costadoro, intent on removing the "blight of people" from the world, and marched towards the rest of the Empire.
The battles raged for 12 years, with plagues and famines ravaging the land, almost every nation in the world sent forces to fight in the apocalyptic battles, eventually ending with the death of Vizael himself along with his 12 generals. The killing blow was struck by an unknown paladin, the light could be seen from miles away. It would take centuries to recover from the cataclysm of this war, the scars would never disappear entirely.
