The Mountain of the Fae

The Mainland of Candesca is connected to both the Realm of the Fae and the Underrealm in the same way: mountains. The only lone mountains in the entire continent, each at opposite ends of the land. Not surprisingly, the one that gets visited the most often is the Mountain of the Fae, which houses a gateway into the Realm of the Fae.

History

The mountain was first discovered by the party of Kindal Havenmark, who led a party of twenty-seven men to explore the northern regions of Candesca. When they stumbled across the mountain, they crossed into the land of the Fae, sealing the bond between the two realms of the world. Since then, people have flocked to the mountain, whether to cross over and study magic with the fae or to simply wonder at the mountain's beauty.

Geography

The mountain itself is large and tall, with many trees growing about halfway up the slope. Then it's shrubs and rock and snow. The place has a quiet beauty about it, with the air cold and crisp and the colors bold and vibrant. Despite its altitude, no one has ever suffered from the thin air. Inside the mountain is a vast network of crystal caverns. It is here that the gateway to the Realm of the Fae resides. It is said that if one listens carefully enough, they can hear the songs of those who came before.

Ecosystem

Life thrives on the Mountain of Fae. There are many books entirely devoted to cataloging the wildlife and plant life, but this quote from Kindal Havenmark says it best.   Birds call to each other, soaring with ease on the refreshing wind. Their feathers are the most vibrant blues and reds and the deepest browns and golds. The forest teems with life. All the animals have a glow about them, and their keen eyes seem to pierce one's soul. The plants grow tall towards the sun, and there are so many that I've never seen or even heard of before. Even past the borders of the forest, the air seems to have the same vibrant aura.
"There was life in the mountain, and magic, too. Even the rock and snow pulsed with its power. I slept easier on that mountain. The wind carried lullabies, and the mountainside offered protection. There was power in that mountain. I wonder at how something so beautiful can exist in a world that is prone to hatred and division. Perhaps, if everyone could see the majesty of the mountain, see its harmony, they would find themselves looking inward and inspired to make the world a better place."
