Mailini Williams

The Protector Mailini WIlliams (a.k.a. Mai)

Mailini Williams, born to Oku and Ussain Williams in 1656, was a powerful and pleasant woman with a knack for invention. She was born in secret under a starry night sky on May 24th, and her parents kept her in a bundle under the bed for the first week of her life in the hopes that the plantation owners would not find and sell her as they did with the other children born on their property.   Sadly, after a small group of slaves had tried to kill the plantation owner in his sleep, routine inspections of their lodgings became routine, and Mailini was quickly found out. Due to her infant status meaning she had no use as a worker, she was allowed to stay until she was old enough to walk, talk, and work. Her parents filled her days with stories of their homeland of Jamaica, and far away fantasies of magic and mirth that she could one day be a part of. They told her how to survive in her situation, and how to rebel, and how, eventually, to escape. They told her about her magic, and how to harness it, and cultivate it, and how it could be used to better her self, her situation, and even the world. They told her her name, and that no matter what other white people would call her, or what they would make her call herself, her name would always be Mailini.   She was taken away and sold when she was 7 to a rich English woman, and spent most of her childhood being shipped from place to place all over the world. She never stayed in one place for very long, since her growing magical energy didn't have enough proper outlets and instead appeared as destructive bursts. We have records of who owned her at what time, and accounts of the things that happened to her during her stay, but Mailini has written often about her want to forget that part of her life and focus instead on the good she has experienced and the good she was able to create, so in her honor, we will not say more.   When she was 12 years old, she was sold to Daniel Clarke, who owned the tobacco plantation that would serve as her last impermanent home. The position working within the house, specifically in the kitchen, put her in contact with another slave, who went by the name of Kostini. After learning they were both magically inclined, they devised an escape plan. With Mailini in the kitchen and Kostini acting as a server and maid, they charmed the owners afternoon tea with a powerful sleeping charm that sent them into a lifelong coma. The two escaped that night into the Blue Ridge Mountains, where they settled into a small secluded cottage and began work on a hidden cavern for safety. Months after 10 different slaves showed up to their home, explaining that stories had spread about their daring escape, and those who recognized the magic in their actions tracked them to live with their peers. They agreed and quickly retrofitted their cave idea into a series of tunnels to keep their newfound friends safe. In 1689, Mailini and Kostini were married within the tunnels. They made their living fostering runaway children and making them toys, which, as more and more magicfolk found out about the tunnels and visited, became a bustling toy shop. While this was not the first coven in America, it was certainly the largest and the most prominent.   During the Salem Witch Trials and subsequent panic, Mailini and Kostini hid within the many intricate tunnels of the cave system, putting their minds to new and innovative booby traps, precautions, and wards.   It was in 1719, after 30 years of isolation, Mailini decided she had enough of hiding. Her and Kostini penned 32 letters to the most regular members of their tunnel-coven asking for them to return, and learn the new ways they had found to stay safe and hidden. of the 32 families contacted, 12 showed up. Mailini and Kostini lead the discussion and subsequent organization later coined the Coven Initiative to return their beautiful community to it's former glory and enter it into a new age of protection and safety.   This idea became the couple's driving force and main goal in life apart from their 3 fostered children and the nest of mice they had found and nurtured during their time in isolation. Mailini was consistently described as a vibrant, kind, cheerful person who saw her own cheery disposition as not just a joy for her and others, but a blatant act of rebellion against those who tried so hard to hurt her. She was reported as being the most strong-willed, compassionate person in the room, who would often start every Coven meeting with a hug and a plate of food to talk over. Famously, her wife Kostini was quoted in saying "[Mailini] is more than the moon, more than the sun, more than every star in the sky. She holds that flame, that warmth, in her chest, and she spreads it into everything she does, everything she is. You hug her, and you feel the earth spinning."     Mailini passed peacefully in her sleep next to her wife on April 12th, 1762 at the age of 106, a day after The Coven initiative finalized it's last ward on the newly repaired and improved Blue Ridge Mountain Tunnel System. A month later, they were immortalized with a gravestone statue of the two sitting over their grave sights, cuddling as they often did in meetings. Her last words were recorded as "We've made a home. We've finally made a home. We did it." In 17In 1834, Busts of her and her wife Kostini were immortalized on the newly minted (COIN NAME).     (Portrait made by Djarn's picrew.)

General Physical Condition

She was a round, short, strong woman who thrived in slow, strength-dominant activities as opposed to fast, quick, precise activities. In her later years she developed arthritis in her hands.

Body Features

She's a round, warm woman with small feet and hands, wide hips, and a figure one can only describe as comforting. She is made to be hugged, all round curves and broad, strong shoulders. Her skin is rough and calloused, particularly her hands, and despite her softer frame, she is far more muscular than should be allowed. She has been known to firemen carry unruly children or board members out of meetings if she deemed it necessary.

Facial Features

Her face is square, and soft, with deep dimples that frame her ever-present smile. Her eyes are a dark, warm brown, and her nose sits round and flat just above her mouth.

Her wedding ring, a simple band made of a thick, strong brass with a small quartz crystal inlay was on her finger constantly.

Failures & Embarrassments

One time she tried to bake her wife an anniversary present with a new broiling spell she had invented, and instead singed off most of her hair and burned sticky caramel goo to the bottom of their best cooking tray. She did not have eyebrows for at least two weeks, and she is very thankful that her wife and colleagues have omitted that one from the history books.

Mental Trauma

Well, she was a slave who was ripped from her home and sent to work in horrible conditions with no resources or anyone else to talk to about her growing powers that constantly got her in trouble, and you could make the argument that she had to essentially kill her captors to find any form of freedom, which she did when she was 12 and then traveled miles on foot in secret with only another small child to keep her safe, and then lost her entire community to nation-wide panic and had to spend almost 30 years in near-complete isolation. So... yeah...

Intellectual Characteristics

Incredible inventor, both in the realm of new magical spells and puzzles, traps, and tricks. The merging of these two things was a revelation that saved the magical world adn some of her booby traps have still yet to be figured out.

Morality & Philosophy

She believes everyone has good in them, and that doesn't matter when they choose to be evil. She will do what she must to survive, but not beyond reason. She prefers delegation and compassion to revenge or violence, and would much rather leave her abusers in the dust than seek them out for catharsis. She believes living a happy life and helping as many people as she can is the only way to spend a life.

Taboos

The unnecessary suffering of others was her main one, along with the general morals she was raised with.
